If the rock was being thrown at the policeman, sure I would, why not? A rock is a deadly weapon, I would be fine with anyone, police or non-police alike, responding to such an attack with deadly force. Don’t you know what stoning was? It’s just killing someone by throwing rocks at them.

Yeah, but doesn’t a stoning involve a large group?
Stones can certainly be deadly weapons when used properly, but it ain’t easy. I’m not sold on a stones throw as a reason for lethal force.

It’s not clear from the article, but it sounds like he threw the stone, then got shot. While I’m aware that a stone can be a deadly weapon, it’s the not exactly easily reusable. If the guy had been threatening to throw it when he got shot, I guess I could see reason in that. If he had a bunch of stones, and had already thrown one, sure, the marshall should defend himself. But if he had one stone, thrown it, missed, and then got shot… well, the guy’s just disarmed himself. Shooting seems a bit excessive at that point, to say the least.

Yeah tell me the reaction of the posters supporting the shooting aren’t racial. If a cop in the States gunned down a white teenager that had chucked a rock at him and run, it would be a major scandal. But because it was a Mexican trying to sneak across the border it is justified. Fucking gringo hypocrisy.

I don’t see why this is true, as I live in America, and I happen to believe CBEscapee is correct when he states that it would be a scandal if a cop shot a white teenager that had just thrown a rock at him and run off.
I’m actually a bit appalled by the fact that you use the argument that we have an immigration problem as justification for why shooting someone in this case is warranted, and that anyone who happens to be on this side of the “fence” would agree with you, simply by virtue of being on this side of the fence.

I said that to counter the charge of racism, not because I think that shooting was appropriate.
That said, we have an obligation to protect our borders. That is what defines us as a country, after all. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with territorial soveriegnty. If we just ignore it we will eventually become a de facto province of Mexico. That may sit well with you, but I’m not Mexican, and if I wanted to become one I would legally emigrate to Mexico. That’s really the bottom line.

You’d have a point if they’d shot him just for crossing the border. If that were the case, I’d be as pissed as you. But that’s not what happened. He threw _rocks_ at the border guard. What good could possibly have come of that? Now, I don’t know all the details, and neither do you, but it seems to me that it’s at least reasonable to suppose the border patrol officer felt his life was in jeopardy.

If he felt his life was truly in danger from having a rock (not rocks) thrown at him he has no business to be in that line of work.
