I was kidding about not trying things for the rest of the year, although the idea crossed my mind for real when I was choking it down.

I pretty much knew before I put it in my mouth that I wouldn’t like it. I don’t really like seafood in general;to _me_ it _all_ has the same underlying taste / smell that I simply find repellent. But, I figured it might be spicy and it’s just a piece of barbecued meat so how bad could it really be? Pretty bad, it turns out ☹ 😉

And no, I didn’t technically “lose” anything by trying it but as I’ve described here many times, ingesting something I really dislike is very high on the scale of unpleasantness for me. Some people have a low pain tolerance and we don’t mock them. I have a low tolerance for bad food experiences. I don’t know how else to put it.

I do wonder IFR what people are saying in this thread is true about me and lobster. I had it once, and it was the first time I ever left the main entree on my plate. I just couldn’t choke it down. But it was at an Outback Steakhouse or similar. And I don’t have the OP’s aversion to seafood.

Problem is that it’s pricey, and no restaurant in town has it at all.

Just out of curiosity, why would you keep trying something you didn’t like the first time? A second chance seems reasonable and maybe even a third if it’s prepared differently or something but I just don’t get trying to make oneself like something.

Taste does change with age, though. For myself many things I hated when I was younger like eggplant and brussel sprouts I now enjoy, so I try to keep an open mind that maybe this time will be the charm.

Besides some things just seem like they _should_ be tasty. I’ve been trying to like papayas for decades. Every other year or three I give it another shot and I’m inevitably disappointed. One of these days though I will develop a taste for them…probably on my deathbed ;).

I had grilled octopus served on octopus ink rice at a great restaurant in Monterrey, Mexico last year.

It was fantastic!

Now, reading through these posts, I’m afraid to ever have it again.
