Your buddy’s idea doesn’t quite make any sense. This gal he would be leaving for – does she really want him to move close to her, or does she think he’s so successful and otherwise happy where he is that she wants to leave California to join him where he is? Anyhow, a failure to communicate is the sign of a breakup, not a happily-ever-after.
The Thong Song by Sisqo – either it’s all in a minor key or it makes a really weird turn to a minor key during the chorus or something.
I have one that’s kind of bizarre: Last Friday Night by Katy Perry. It’s essentially about recovering from a rage of a party the next day. Things is, by rights the melody puts the song in the key of G, but the song NEVER ACTUALLY GOES TO A G CHORD EVEN ONCE. The Song’s progression is C-Am-Em-D, so one could conclude that the song is actually in E minor, but the repetition of the note G as a root of do-re-mi is unmistakable and the song feels like it’s in G even though it never resolves to a G chord. Weird, eh?
ETA: The online help says the song is F# major, so just bring everything down by a fret (Semi-tone): B-G#m-D#m-C#. Still no resolution to what appear to be the chord of the actual key.
“Ievan Polkka” from Finland is a fun song in the Aeolian minor mode.
“Along Comes Mary” by the Association is a cheerful song in the Dorian minor mode.
“Venus” by Shocking Blue. She’s got it. Yeah, baby, she’s got it.
“Minnie the Moocher” by Cab Calloway doesn’t have happy lyrics, but it is a fun song. Hi de hi de hi!
