There’s a looser sense of “animal” which is closer to “Warm-blooded land creature” ([sense 3.2 here](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/animal#Etymology_1)) or even just “(non-human)mammal”. It’s the sense we use when we distinguish between humans and animals, for example. In that colloquial taxonomy, insects are not animals. ---
