Hardesty, Oklahoma, wretched hive of scum and villainy

Damn those Jews for participating in the holocaust.

Careful, Dan. As per Liberal, it is wildly inappropriate to compare a situation where someone is harrassed, threatened, and physically assaulted for their beliefs, to the Holocaust! Clearly, the two situations have nothing at all in common, and it does a grave disservice to the victims of the Nazis when you compare their plight to someone merely undergoing institutionalized bigotry and violence for having a minority religious viewpoint. The two situations are not remotely similar!

Of course they are not similar, the point however, is that it’s absurd to say that it takes two parties to have a confrontation. How about these instead: damn those people in the WTC for inciting the terrorists, Kennedy for inciting Oswald, or Lennon for aggravating Chapman.

Read Miller’s post again with your whoosh meter turned on.

:smack:

If I may make a suggestion…

Let’s just ignore Lib from now on in this thread. The guy obviously has nothing to contribute but sheer idiocy. Unless you enjoy wrestling with pigs, of course.

It’d be nice to briefly describe what the hell the thread is about in the OP, too. I don’t have Internet service (my roommate has decided he shouldn’t have to pay his share on time, and I can’t afford to pay the whole thing); I open as many SDMB threads as possible in tabs for the short time I can catch someone else’s wireless signal, and then I read them offline and type up replies in Notepad until I catch a signal again. Trying to piece together a story from two-line snippets of news articles is frustrating and time-consuming, let me tell you.

Apparently you don’t see the irony of calling someone a troll and then dropping that bomb on us. Or you see it and refuse to care. Either way, I refuse to feed you.

What’s funny is these people probably think they’re incredibly tolerant and progressive-minded because their sheriff never literally says “You better not let the sun set on you here, nigger!” anymore. This whole thing is so full of irony it’s gonna start oxidating.

Not to mention that the man has had a hit put out on him BY THE FUCKING SHERIFF. Liberal, what nineteenth-century Texas prairie do you live on where this is acceptable behavior for anyone, let alone an officer of the law?

If you think that’s bad, I present El Cajon, California (~30 miles east of San Diego), where a FOAF found a dead cat and a burning cross on his lawn the morning after he anonymously started a Gay/Straight Alliance at his high school.

To me that’s the most egregious part of the story. It would be bad enough had the guy been suspected of raping a white woman or killing a kid. But the asswipe inbred stoopid fuck of a sheriff put a hit out on him because his daughter wouldn’t pray. How anybody could defend such ignorant and hateful behavior is beyond me.

I would be remiss if I did not take advantage of this rare opportunity to invite you to fetch a hammer and chisel and to savagely pound your irrelevant glurge back up into your ass.

Love,
Turnip

Pretty sure he’s not coming back to this thread anyway. He retreated to the GD thread where it’s harder to give his, ahem, arguments the derision they deserve.

At my high school it was mandantory to attend assembly where we listened to preachers invited by the principal. One preacher said, “The Constitution guarantees freedom of religion but not freedom from religion.”

Right so…

If a proper Christian raises proper Christian children, that’s ok then, good use of the Lord’s time, all that jazz.

If an Atheist raises Atheist children, then we are using them and manipulating them, akin to the way Phelps does, even though he’s a Christian like yourself. Albeit of a different flavor, I’d hope. But one never knows what lurks in the hearts of men, yeah?

Right. Thanks ever so for helping me twist my worldview just a little more.

Cheers,

New old twist.

In 1993 Superintendent of Education in Okahoma, Sandy Garrette, sent letters to public school administrators setting policy prohibiting prayer at school sponsored/organized events (e.g., sporting events, graduation). It doesn’t matter if the Lord’s Prayer at the basketball game was student led, to re-inforce team solidarity, etc. it’s in violation of Oklahoma regs.

Good news, I suppose, but you just know that the Smallkowskis are going to get blamed for this. The harassment will just increase.

It’s too bad you think that. I certainly don’t.

That sounded so bizarre that I had to check it out. The only website I could find cooberating it was this. And so I called Sandy Garrett’s Office at its listed number, and was told by a man who identified himself as Art Schofield that students may pray any time they wish at any school event so long as they don’t interfere with the school’s function. Specifically, he said, they may gather and pray voluntarily before or after basketball or football games. He said that it would be a violation of federal law to prohibit students from leading one another in prayer.

The policy was probably about school sponsored prayer or the use of school PA systems.

Still, this kid was retaliated against by the school (and the local police) for not praying, so there isn’t any question that her rights were violated.

I agree that people using their Rights to free exercise of religion and peaceable assembly, even if they happen to be <18yo students at a public school, should be left alone. I said as much more than 100 posts earlier in the thread.

The school administration demonstrated in its response to non-participation that the prayer is neither voluntary nor student-led.

At least we can come together on something. And like I said early on as well, if she was mistreated then she deserves to be made whole. She has every bit as much right to express her atheism as the other students have to express their faith. My only problem has been with her father who impresses me as a raving lunatic, both from his interview and from his own writings. I just would have handled things very differently if it were my daughter. If that pisses people off, too bad. I don’t think it makes me unreasonable or worthless to listen to.

You have been so very disingenuous in this entire thread. I probably would have handled things differently were it my daughter too, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to call the guy a raving lunatic and try to discredit him at every available opportunity and make it seem like he’s creating much ado about nothing. I will grant you that he may possibly have overreacted, though if the bit about the sheriff trying to get him killed is true, I don’t think there’s any kind of lawful overreaction possible.

You have been desperately trying to make him out to be the bad guy and thus minimize what the family has gone through, and now you’re trying to play the martyr by claiming that you’re being vilified because you simply would have done things differently? Please.
