Harrison Ford along with John Travolta are known to be among the most dedicated and competent celebrity pilots that are committed to aviation skills, knowledge and ratings. It shows in this case because it is not easy to drop a plane down in a crowded residential neighborhood even if you do have some limited space to work with. There is some serious decisions that have to be made very quickly in terms of overall risk assessment. It looks like he chose wisely given the circumstances presented. That is a real-life Indiana Jones stunt. I am sorry that he and the plane got hurt but most pilots wouldn’t have been able to pull that off at all. ---

Did the golf course have enough advance warning to clear golfers off of the fairway, or did they just have to make a run for it? ---

I haven’t piloted a plane in decades, but I remember well that my training involved always evaluating possible emergency landing sites. My instructor would pull back the throttle and say “You just lost your engine. Now what?” And I’d trim the plane for maximum glide and set up to land. It’s a basic skill that, fortunately, I never needed to use. I can see how a non-pilot could be amazed at what Ford did, and while I am impressed, on the other hand, it’s no big deal. It’s what you learn to do before you ever get a license. Good on him for remembering the basics and walking away from a broken airplane! With enough duct tape, he should have it back in the air in no time! 😃 ---

I’ve heard reports he had multiple broken bones, and saw some footage of him being loaded onto a stretcher at the site. But you’re right, you always keep possible emergency landing sites in mind, and you tend to know where they are at your home airport - a pilot based at Santa Monica would know about the golf course, and even which fairways are best aligned for a landing. It isn’t all that difficult a feat, either - even a normal approach and landing are done at idle power or only slightly above, and a failed engine does nothing more than slightly increase your descent rate and prevent a go-around. Still a job well done, though.
