Has anyone seen A Mighty Wind?

Just popping in to say to myself from a year ago.

Hi, me! Oh, hey - get your car battery checked. It’ll save you a lot of headaches!

Yes! I downloaded some of the songs from iTunes (those free iTunes from the Pepsi caps really helped out . . . ) and I keep on humming them!

I showed this movie to my mom and she loved the music and loved the sense of humor. She’s a singer and does some composing for herself and I consider her to have a very good ear. She’s going to be getting the Mighty Wind songbook (which has all the sheet music). I tell her, “You know, the lyrics on some of these songs (like When You’re Next to Me) are really weird!” and she said, “I don’t care. I just love these songs.” She’s especially fond of Mitch and Mickey.

Also, did anyone else see the extras (like deleted scenes) on the DVD? I loved the one where Eugene Levy (Mitch) is talking about how he loves rap music, and he used to listen to Canadian rap music, where they rapped about politeness, etc. Hilarious!

I’m thinking of getting the frikkin’s soundtrack…I’m not a folk song fan, but I keep having these songs go through my head all the time! I like the song played at the end credits–Do What the Good Book Says (?), where the guy sings that we would be sleeping in the cracks between the giants’ toes. And the music pauses and they say “well that’s not very nice!” Cracks me up.

They’re not all songs I’d choose to listen to - some are - but almost all of them are quite catchy. I think Wanderin’ is #1 for that. In fact, I can tell it’ll be in my head for hours. Thanks a frickin’ lot.

I agree completely (except maybe for the part about them making it as folk singers, I don’t think they played their own instruments). That’s what I liked about this movie: it wasn’t as funny overall as Best in Show, but there was some real emotion there and that made it very memorable. As I’ve said in other threads about this movie, I don’t like Eugene Levy at all, and I really thought he was terrific.

If that had happened, there might have been three actors nominated for comic roles- which we all know would be a sign of the Apocalypse.

Oh, one other thing: I was glad that the film picked up on Oscar nomination for it’s music, but I really thought the title song would’ve been a better choice.

Weird. I just finished watching this again on cable five minutes ago!

“Aaaah-vay Mah-reeeeeee-ahhh…”

Confession time:

Listening to the New Main Street Singers has become my new guilty pleasure.

:o

Actually, the entire cast did play their own instruments. That’s listed on the trivia page of the IMDB (item #5) and the official soundtrack site.

A Mighty Wind was O.K., but nothing to sing about.

[d&r]

If you grew up in the 50’s, the music was a) very good and b) smack-dab on. The rest of the show was not nearly as funny as Spinal Tap, but the music was worth the time spend–for me.

<sigh> (Don’t post while drinking beer)
the music in A Might Wind was…

worth the time spend = worth the time spent

I loved this movie. The music was really good, just like Tap’s, and the characterizations were hysterical.

Did they do their own singing. I know the Folksmen did, but did the others?

Yup.
Mr. singular and I had the enormous pleasure of seeing the whole cast performing live on the last night of their tour. These are tremendously talented people, and the concert was an absolute blast! How nice that we have the DVD as a concert souvener, too!

I just watched the DVD again last night, and finally got a joke that I’d missed before:

A mighty wind’s a-blowin’
It’s blowin’ you and me!

We get out the DVD occasionally just so I can listen to “When I’m Next to You.”

Partly because I think it’s one of the sweetest songs I’ve heard in a long time…and partly because it drives my son crazy.

I have all the Guest movies, and their intentions seem so different to me that I find it hard to compare them.

I will say that I watched a real documentary on cover bands…and my kids thought it was the new Guest mockumentary.

OK, I’ll confess . . . I took my old decrepit autoharp into the shop to be repaired because of A Mighty Wind.

Mr. S and I go to hear folk musicians quite often, and have two annual folk festivals that we always attend. The musicianship in Wind was surprisingly good. Take “Potato’s in the Paddy Wagon”: goofy song, but GREAT harmony! Gives me the chills. John Michael Higgins (who played Terry Bohner, the lead guy in the New Main Street Singers) arranged all their music. I loved his voice in “The Good Book Song,” another hilarious song.

Can’t wait for the next Christopher Guest installment.
