It has become increasingly obvious that Moscow Center has realized a hidden truth, that the pulsing heart of American opinion is the intertubes. And the galactic hub, the axle upon which everything turns, is the SDMB. The Cecilians, then the pundit class, the government and, then, at long last!..moose and squirrel.

> You don’t have to guess. The lame stream media includes every news organization that can’t/won’t report a story correctly. News media outlets who’s primary goal is to be the FIRST to report a story, regardless of whether or not the facts are correct, qualifies as a lame stream media outlet. Any news outlet which is too lazy, too incompetent, or too biased to properly verify the actual facts of a story qualifies as a lame stream media outlet. Any news outlet who is in pocket of a political party qualifies as a lame stream media outlet. Any news outlet who’s TV stars think they are more important than the news stories they are paid to present definitely qualifies as a lame stream media outlet.

You must absolutely hate Fox news then

I vaguely recall a well-intentioned but foolhardy campaign on the part of several posters to elicit from you a less facile observation than “the press should do a better job” along with some examples of news organizations that you find trustworthy, for comparison/contrast with the “lame stream media.” I don’t suppose a similar effort here would have any greater chance of success.

For me this chart seems about right. I have my alarm set to NPR every morning and I think they are certainly pretty trustworthy.

Very interesting. Intercept is hyper-partisan left?..I guess it is if I look past Greenwald.\* They do employ Shaun King.

\*Which brings up, can you be hyper-partisan left if you frequently call out the left?

Well, no, that’s not even remotely close to what I wrote. If Bill says, “I support Trump for more coal!” and Cletus says, “I support Trump for less abortions,” and I say, “You’re both full of shit, you just hate black people,” there’s no issue of hypocrisy involved. Bill and Cletus’s positions are not in opposition, and I’m not claiming that they are, I’m just saying that they’re being dishonest about their motivations.

The point is, to demonstrate hypocrisy, you need to demonstrate that a given individual holds contrary positions. Two different people holding contrary positions isn’t hypocrisy, even if they share other qualities. If Bill says, “More Christian values,” and Cletus says, “Grab 'em by the pussy!” and they both vote for Trump, Cletus isn’t being a hypocrite because Bill supports Christian values. Bill, on the other hand, is a huge hypocrite, because his stated position and his political actions are in opposition to each other.

So, if **UltraVires** wants to point out the hypocrisy in **Airbeck** ’s position, he needs to demonstrate that **Airbeck** specifically took a different position over a similar issue. It’s not enough to just say, “Well, some _other_ liberals said something different, so that makes you a hypocrite!”

> Anything to say about [media manipulation from the other side?](https://theslot.jezebel.com/covington-catholic-student-hired-pr-firm-co-founded-by-1831948833)

I think hiring a PR firm was fully justified. I don’t think it’s media manipulation to give the other perspective. It’s certainly not as distorted as many of the descriptions given by others. Including Nathan Phillips, who says he thought the kids were building up to violence against the Black Hebrew protestors, and so he went into their group to diffuse the situation, and to put himself between them so if anything happened it had to start against him. That’s his perspective, but not necessarily accurate or fair.

> [@Czarcasm](#):
>
> Those students in the MAGA hats from the private school that got bused in to harass women,

What’s wrong with encouraging political activism in America’s youth? So their opinions strongly offend you, and their behavior could be better. Doesn’t make taking them on a protest trip bad by default.

> [@Urbanredneck](#):
>
> That “backlash” was closing their school, assault, and even murder.

I assume you meant _threats_ of assault and murder, because nobody has been assaulted or murdered over this that we have heard of.

> [@doorhinge](#):
>
> A “victim” would be a teenager who was simply standing on the Lincoln Memorial steps when he was targeted by an old man, and his entourage, for simply standing on the Lincoln Memorial steps.

That’s not an accurate summary. The group of teenagers were targeted by one small group of adults (Black Hebrews), and they then put up with an hour of provocation before finally resorting to some school spirit chants to try to keep their morale up against the vile curses hurled at them. Then another adult decided they were going to be violent and walked up into their midst and directly up to one of the students. Phillips says he expected the kid to step out of the way like the others did, but when he didn’t, he was worried about his own safety. But he could have tried stepping around the kid, but didn’t.

> Tomahawk chops and doing indian war chants - you call that racist? Damn, what rock do you live under? Didnt you watch the [Chiefs vs Patriots game last sunday](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4P6z_DTHf8)? I’m from Kansas City and its the normal chant for the Chiefs and other teams. Watch that attached video and you will see a stadium of 30,000 Chiefs fans doing it.
>
> Is everyone of them also a racist?

Yeah, it’s kind of racist. The fans may be doing it out of a benign ignorance or a lack of empathy, but it is a bit racist.

> [@](#):
>
> No, the kids didnt do a damn thing wrong. They should NOT be shamed. They should be held up as heroes for standing their ground, showing restraint, and holding onto the beliefs.

Heroes? :dubious: I do agree they deserve praise for their restraint in that situation, and not escalating or starting any violence. They’re teenagers, they easily could have.

> [@BigT](#):
>
> They wore MAGA hats despite that having nothing to do with their supposed purpose, which was a pro-life protest,

Um, maybe they see the MAGA hats as directly related, as is a conservative President who is appointing conservative judges and who has expressed opinions to overthrow Roe vs. Wade.

> [@](#):
>
> …and then acted like exactly what MAGA does mean, telling different colored people to go back to their own country and otherwise pushing racist slurs.

The only ones I heard telling someone to go back to their own country was a Native American telling the whites that. The racist slurs were coming from the Black Hebrews.

> [@Snowboarder\_Bo](#):

> No, he wasn’t. Characterizing him as an asshole for doing something in public is prejudicing the discussion. He had every right to be there and to bang his drum. He did not impede anyone’s travels, but his were impeded.
> Only after they prevented him from walking thru.
> Cite? Don’t worry: I know you’re talking out of your ass here and have no cite other than what’s in your head. Unfortunately for you, that isn’t a valid cite.
> No, they didn’t. Now you’re trying to re-write an incident that is on video? Good luck with that.

I watched that part of the video. It appears to me the teens don’t know what Phillips is doing with his drum, and think he is drumming along with them, and they do some standard pep rally clap along things. Then it gets weird when Phillips steps up to Sandmann, who doesn’t move out of the way because he is confused about what is going on. And Phillips was the one who directly confronted the boys, not the other way around. He didn’t even try to step around Sandmann, who just stood still. Sandmann wasn’t blocking his path, he was standing where he had been standing. He didn’t bob and weave to keep Phillips contained, he just stood still with a confused smirky smile, hoping it would be peaceful and calm.

> [@Chronos](#):
>
> Can we start with the premise that this school was bussing underage students across the country to rally for the school’s political causes? Because right there, something already doesn’t smell right.

It’s political activism, not a bad thing in and of itself.

> [@begbert2](#):
>
> Nonsense - if this was true then they’d have no way to have separated out the kids from all the other white people when they were targeting them for their criticism.

People jumped on an assumed story that fit their prejudices, in part that the white kids were aggressive towards the Native Americans, who were minding their own business. That is a false narrative that fits certain expectations. “The MAGA hat wearers are clearly at fault, there are more of them and they are white and they have on Trump hats. Must be their fault.”

> [@Procrustus](#):
>
> If you can imagine a non-deplorable reason to wear such a thing, you have a better imagination than I do.

Someone supports Trumps campaign statements of bringing back manufacturing and other skilled jobs. They support his push for conservative judges.

> [@BigT](#):
>
> I myself brought up the MAGA hat not because it makes them bad people, but because the hat has nothing to do with their purported reason for being there. They were supposed to be doing a pro-life protest. Wearing a pro-life hat would make sense. But a MAGA hat shows they were really there for a pro-Trump message.

Really, people can attribute more than one meaning to a symbol. They can use the Trump hat as a symbol of their pro-life position because of Trump’s claims to be Pro-life and appointing conservative judges.

> [@](#):
>
> And then they did say things that fit that. They pushed the “foreigners go home” message. They pushed a white supremacist message. And, like it or not, those were actually part of the “Make America Great Again” proposal.
>
> The MAGA hat was suspicious due to the reason for their protest, and then their actions confirmed the suspicions. Legit pro-life protesters would care more about pushing the anti-abortion message.

When did they chant “foreigners go home” and white supremacist things? It’s not on the videos I watched.

> [@nate](#):
>
> I’m still confused about the right’s response to this video and what is taken out of context. Even after seeing other parts of the video, I don’t see how this changes what we saw in the viral part of the video. Did the native American walk up to the kid and start banging the drum in his face? Or did the kid walk up to the native American? I could care less about the confrontation between the kids and the Hebrew Israelites… or that the native americans walked up towards the kids banging drums. Now if the native American walked up to the kid and started banging his drum two inches from his nose, I could then see how this video was taken out of context. Is that what happened?

Yes, Phillips walked up to the teens, the teens parted, he walked further forward, so they circled him, then he walked up to Sandmann, who didn’t move. Then he stood banging his drum and chanting directly in Sandmann’s face, without trying to go around, or talking in English about what his message was so the teens could understand what was up. And his buddy, another Native American, was telling them to go back to Europe.

> [@Airbeck](#):
>
> Attack? When was there an attack? That appears to be a fabrication on your part. I’m not aware of anyone being attacked in this incident. Was there a police report filed for assault and battery?

 He clearly means the media and social media attacks, not some physical assaults.

> [@Snarky\_Kong](#):
>
> Because you are misrepresenting what the clip shows in order to show the man in a less favorable light.

No he is not. Look at the 2:20 mark in the video and listen to Phillips discussing from his perspective what happened. He walked up to Sandmann, who didn’t move out of the way because he didn’t know what was going on. Phillips made no attempt to go around.

Hahahaha. You vaguely recall a foolhardy campaign, and suddenly you wish to start another one. I guess you have more time on your hands than I thought possible. Oh well. In my spare time I’ll try to help you understand why I won’t be distracted by playing your game. I’m a notorious channel-changer. I really do not like watching commercials. click, click, click, click, click. I like to watch old movies, and the news. click, click, click, click, click. I watch them all, because, eventually, I might find out what the actual story is. You may have your favorite news media outlets, or maybe you enjoy biased news, or maybe you like wading thru horseshit hoping to find a pony. Personally, I would like all news media outlets to simply report the news. I don’t need them to tell me how to think, or what to think. I don’t want them to endlessly play what-if word-games on my time. VERIFY what actually happened, and pass the information along to me.

I could use your help. You can chose to champion bias, spin, agendas, and piss poor reporting, or you can demand that your favorite news media outlet place accuracy, facts, the truth, and verification of stories at the top of their priority list.

I feel the same way about all of the haters who are trying to justify their racism by blaming someone’s hat. I’m also saying that they are being dishonest about their motivations. Haters gotta hate, racists come in all skin colors, and racists target people of all colors.

So that’s what the inside of a bubble looks like. Interesting.

Depends on who you ask. Trump is currently around 41% approval ratings ([cite](https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/president_trump_job_approval-6179.html)) and BLM is only a little higher ([cite](https://www.newsweek.com/black-lives-matter-protests-police-646050)).

That goes back to something I said earlier - the MSM and liberals genuinely think a MAGA hat and a Klan hood are the same thing. It never occurred to them to verify whatever bad things anyone said about the kids. Because - well, they were wearing MAGA hats. _Of course_ they did whatever they were accused of doing. Just like Hillary was going to be elected.

Everybody knows these things - there is no need to check

I suppose I am in a bubble. I don’t interact with anyone who I know or suspect voted for, or supports, President Trump. ( Other than here at the SDMB)

The very idea is still incomprehensible to me. Literally. I can not comprehend.

I do understand the problems people are facing. To believe Trump is anyway connected to solving those problems is the mystifying part.
