Why am I being told “You’re doing that too much…”
Karma is stored on a per-subreddit basis. If you have low karma in a subreddit, this will trigger a rate-limiting timer which limits you to 1 post/comment per 10 minutes. When you post, you’ll get a message telling you “You’re doing that too much. Please wait X minutes.” - where X is the number of minutes left until the 10-minute period will finish. This timer applies to both posts and comments.
If you delete your pending post/comment before that 10 minutes is finished, then you will have to start the 10-minute wait again. Just wait out the 10 minutes.
This timer will mainly be triggered if you’re new to a subreddit (zero karma), or if you’ve previously been downvoted in that subreddit (negative karma). It can also be triggered if you have a habit of submitting to a subreddit and then deleting those submissions.
It takes only a fairly small amount of positive karma to remove the limit.
I prefer communities that allow members to decide for themselves which posts / posters to ignore, rather than letting a popularity contest do that for the whole group.

Only a few subreddits do this, not nearly all of them.

The OP and the replies have generally dealt with the SDMB’s decline in traffic “over the years”. That’s certainly true, for all the reasons cited and perhaps others. But the question I’ve had, and have been checking ATMB for the past couple weeks to look for threads about, is whether it has had a noticeable falloff just in the past couple months, a steeper drop than what had been the ongoing attrition. It sure seems like it to me.
I was curious about whether your perception matched some data points, so I looked up my usual data set for that type of perception. I went to the Wayback Machine , put in dates for the last several months and looked at the active member count on that date.
Here are some data points of dates and active member counts.
11/18/18. . . . . .3423
That’s actually pretty stable. There hasn’t been all that much change in the last several months.
Contrast that with previous years’ active member count.
10/10/16. . . . . . 5005
Betweem 2017 and 2018 was a bit more of a change.
It might depend on where you post that you might experience more slowness.
Nice find. There were 7100 active members in the middle of 2012, so the number dropped by half in 6 years or so.
