Well, there is Eureka, Fayettenam, and Hot Springs which I find pretty tolerable if not no down right hospitable @ times. Many parts of the LR area are okay as well. Of course, this leaves the other 2/3 of the state that I’d rather not discuss here in public.

Northwest Arkie here! The Hastings in Fayettenam is OK. Springdale got one a few years ago, a LOT more christian-oriented. But Barnes and Noble is close by.
I guess I shouldn’t tell you guys abput my favorite independent bookstore in DC, Kramerbooks, which has a bar inside! So I can read the newest Pratchett over a draft Guinness.

We have a Hasting’s in my North Texas city of 100,000 population too. Unlike your Hastings though, this one hasn’t caved into pressure. Last week, I was in there and not behind the counter where you have to ask for them or have them back ordered, but out in public display there was High Times, Head, and Cannabis Culture and one or two other MJ magazines whose names I forget at the moment; not to mention all of the nudie magazines.

Fayettenam? I’ve heard it referred to that several times in the recent past but I don’t understand the connotation.
Can someone explain? I love NWA and think it is a pretty nice place when I’ve visited. So what does the “nam” part refer to? I don’t get the connection to Vietnam. Call me stupid. Of all places in Arkansas I always thought that part of the state was the most progressive. I hope it isn’t some sort of racist statement referring to Vietnamese living there (if there are any). Is it some sort of political thing maybe?

IIRC, it’s a hold over from the days of the Viet Nam War days. Viet Nam or Fayettenam was the choice. Then, I think, it began to refer to the brutal level of partying that occured. U of A was one of the Playboy top ten pary schools at one point.
