Interestingly, the original series also introduced a foolproof lie detector and then immediately discarded it. “Wolf in the Fold,” the episode where Scotty is put on trial. “Lie to me, Scotty! How old are you?” “Er… twenty-two, Sir!” (BS ALERT SOUNDS) I figure that in the future, lies are like the flu. You can figure out a cure for this year’s strain, but by next year a resistant strain will have evolved. First contact with the Ferengi alone must have introduced the Federation to untold dozens of horribly virulent, syphillis-like strains of deception. ---

From the very first episode, I hated her. For no reason at all. Just plain fucking hatred! Don’t get me wrong, I love Star Trek TNG, and almost all characters on the show except for maybe Riker and Wesley, both of whom I neither like nor hate (maybe more of hate…). But hatred for Deanna is on an whole other different level. She is annoying, useless, talks like she got a candle up her ass all the time, acts like she is better than others and one thousand other reasons maybe… but i think i wouldve still hated her even if she was none of the above. ---

I’ve mentioned this in other threads (strange that I didn’t in this one - I must have been distracted back in 2007), that Troi’s drunk scene in _First Contact_ was the only good scene that character (and that movie) ever had. ---

Personally, the problem I had with Troi was that it felt like her whole purpose on the show was to be sexy… But she was only the third-hottest woman on the show, which just made her seem pointless. ---

Good point! I believe that Roddenberry originally wanted Latvians, or whatever the hell species she was, to have four breasts. One must wonder had than been done, if she would wear the falsies to conventions. :dubious: ---

I would have been all over hatin’ on Deanna Troi, but in Voyager, she made some pretty awesome guest star appearances and ended up being one of the best, most likable and memorable characters on that show. Which isn’t saying much, I know… but still. ---

I saw her whole purpose to be the offerer of wise advice…which no one would ever take. (Which is just as well, because about half the time, her advice was terrible!) The show was full of very frustrated characters. Troi’s advice was rarely listened to; Worf never got to beat anybody to a pulp; Dr. Crusher rarely was able to treat anyone’s ailments; La Forge rarely got to do much of anything at all; Data spent half the time looking quizzically aside, then shrugging and accepting the he didn’t get the joke; and Wesley Crusher was patronized and ignored and became vigorously hated by the fans. Only Picard and Riker got any kind of gratification from their jobs. Picard’s satisfaction usually came in the form of overruling his officers, and Riker’s joy was in being the cheerful, mindless, robotic “Yes Man” to Picard. “Will, go and talk to the alien diplomats; don’t rile them but don’t flatter them; don’t give an inch, but don’t start a war. Have you got that?” And Riker, with a big shit-eating grin, says, “Yes, sir!” and negotiates a treaty, which Picard then vetoes. The possibilities in the ensemble were wonderful, but the tepid writing negated so much of it. Just once in a while, please, let Worf punch somebody’s face in! ---
