You know what, G-SE, gonzo is absolutely correct. Obama released his birth certificate three years ago. What is wrong with you? What did you expect to see on his “long form” Certificate of Live Birth?
Actually, Larry Wilcox made the point on a recent Daily Show this this was opportunism rather than racism, and Chester A. Arthur had faced similar claims. I’d add that it’s willfully disingenuous opportunism, in the sense that pretending not to recognize the absurdity of a position allows one to keep trying to argue it, useful when one can’t or won’t summon the effort to find criticism of value.
I’m pretty sure he gave more information then. I don’t think John McCain ever released his birth certificate for public consumption, and I don’t think any state required that one be shown by presidential candidates in order to get access to the ballot.
The Birthers are in pain.

He had already posted sufficient evidence for rational people. The fact that the long form didn’t end the nonsense is hard proof that nothing would persuade these people.
But, it did have the benefit of flushing out those for whom no evidence would be sufficient.
100% agree. Counterarguments to your points come across, transparently, as defensive partisan nitpicking.
Either the real reason is genuine nefariousness of some kind (which is why folks jump from the BC to his education to something else, they can’t put their finger on what exactly is suspicious about him, but something seems to be, and stop with the race card already) OR just a very protective, non-transparent attitude about his entire background.
Either way, secrecy breeds suspicion. The last administration was like that too.
I agree, the approach not to provide ALL information immediately and in every POSSIBLE form (long-form, etc.) made it drag on for years. His fault.
And, by the way, just the mere fact that someone, SOMEONE, has enough of a brain to refer to the recent document for what it is, a “recently-generated abstract of the record” is incredibly satisfying. Using that phrase doesn’t in and of itself cast any doubt on anything but it’s annoying to hear so-called journalists, who are usually perfectly willing to ferret out the nuances and technicalities on everything, casually refer to the “original birth certificate” when referring to that document.

Obama quite quickly provided sufficient documentation of his citizenship and birth. Documentation that would be sufficient for any other citizen, for any purpose, at any time. The people insisting that this situation, with this specific President, is somehow different are the ones who’ve made it drag on for years, and will continue to drag it on for years to come.

Kennedy faced religious bigotry (“The Vatican will run the US!”) when he was campaigning for the presidency and, of course, Romney’s faced and is facing religious bigotry too (“The Mormon church will run the US!”). There’s nothing new here: irrational people playing up their irrational hatred.

Further other countries have no problem with politicians having private lives and manage to be completely transparent in politics- to try and link a choice not to give in to crazy people with a style of governing is facile at best and at worst a deliberate attempt to make this whole saga into Obama’s responsibility and not on those pushing the theory and the politicians which encouraged them for their own gains.

Strange isn’t it that nobody ever asked other candidates for a long form. We all took it for granted that they were qualified legally to run for president.We knew the government would check them out. But Obama is supposed to keep reacting to the crazies and give them whatever they ask.
This stupidity that some states are going to preempt the national government and demand that candidates (only Obama) provide them with their own level of proof, should embarrass their residents. They are not trying to get a higher level of proof. They have no right to demand it. they are just trying to get the Democrat. They are trying ton get the black guy.

The Federal Government doesn’t run run the elections, the states do. Explain why they should not check for a candidates eligibility.
