Have any Dopers taught themselves complicated stuff without any help?...

I taught myself knitting, as well as the more complicated stitches, cable and mosaic.

One of these days I’ll work up enough nerve to make a sweater, instead of non-guage stuff like pillows, shawls, dishcloths and armrest covers.

Then, maybe, I can learn crocheting. It seems like all the really pretty patterns are crochet. (But I’m having too much fun knitting. I’ve got new stuff coming in the mail from Knit Picks!)

I’ll add to the self-taught knitting group. Also taught myself how to bake bread from scratch. All sorts of fancy cooking things, accounting (enough to get me a job as a bookeeper for 3+ years). All of my computer skills are self taught. I know enough of emergency medicine to keep my little brother alive on the way to the hospital (many, many times…It’s the USMC’s job now). I am planning on teching myself geology and creative writing.

When I was in junior high school, I taught myself to play the euphonium (baritone horn).

More recently, I taught myself HTML and then FrontPage.

Mostly, though, I’ve obediently done what others told me to do.

I’ve taught myself the spanish subjunctive, which is complicated for some.

I have a 68 camaro Muscle Car that I’ve been tinkering around with now for the last six and a half years. I’m still in the process of teaching myself how to maintain it. So far Ive gone through:

Three engines
Three Transmissions
Three Floor Shifters
Entire Brake system

and Im STILL breaking / learning things as I go along with it

That’s a more effective but harder way to attack cyphers.

In fact, everything I know about network and system security I learnt it myself.

Hmm. I taught myself:

Dreamweaver

Adobe Photoshop

HTML

Diagnosing and treating of snakes (even if I still have to go to the vet to get meds - “Hey, I need such and such amount of yadda yadda medication.” pause “Huh. Yeah you do. Here you go.”)
