This site – [http://www.wheretodoresearch.com/Political.htm#Endorsements](http://www.wheretodoresearch.com/Political.htm#Endorsements) – gives lists of newspapers that endorsed Bush and Gore, respectively, in 2000. Bush’s list is a lot longer. I’ve found no comprehensive listing of this year’s endorsements. Does anybody know if any newspaper that endorsed Bush in 2000 has changed its mind and endorsed Kerry this year? Conversely, have any newspapers that endorsed Gore in 2000 decided to back Bush this year?

Bush’s hometown paper, the _The Iconoclast_, endorsed Kerry after endorsing Bush in 2000.

Related question: does anyone know who _The Economist_ magazine is endorsing this year? In 2000 it was Bush, I’m curious which way they’ll go this year, but I haven’t had time to read it in the last few months

> WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The New York Times, one of America’s most influential newspapers, on Sunday endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry as a potentially “great chief executive.”
>
> With just 16 days before the Nov. 2 election, Kerry gained the backing of 27 papers on Sunday and President Bush won nine, according to Editor and Publisher, which tracks the newspaper industry. Kerry leads Bush in newspaper endorsements 42 to 22, the journal said on its Web site.

>
> The Chicago Tribune, a regionally influential paper close to several Midwestern battleground states, cast Bush better able to ensure U.S. security.

>
> In key swing states, Kerry won endorsements from the Dayton Daily News and the Akron Beacon-Journal in Ohio, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune in Minnesota and four Florida papers including the Miami Herald. The Boston Globe in his home state of Massachusetts also backed Kerry.
>
> In Ohio, two smaller papers – The Repository in Canton and The Times-Republic in New Philadelphia – backed Bush.
>
> In North Carolina, home of Kerry’s running mate John Edwards, the Winston-Salem Journal made no endorsement. The paper said had endorsed a Republican in every presidential election since 1968, but it said Bush’s administration was “a presidency in deep trouble” and called Kerry “largely unknown and untried.”

> NEW YORK Senator John Kerry picked up a raft of newspaper endorsements on Sunday, widening his lead over President George W. Bush in this area.
>
> Kerry gained the editorial backing of at least 28 papers, with Bush winning the support of 14 that we know of, giving Kerry the lead by 43-27 in E&P’s exclusive tally. He has many more large papers on his side, maintaining his “circulation edge” at nearly 3-1: approximately 8.5 million to 3 million (we will post a complete tally later today).
>
> However, Bush did pick up the endorsement of the Chicago Tribune, Arizona Republic, the Denver Rocky Mountain News, the Indianapolis Star and The Dallas Morning News.
>
> Among Kerry’s new supporters were five papers that had backed Bush in 2000: the Bradenton Herald in Florida, the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colorado, the Columbia Tribune in Missouri, Colorado and the Daily-Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill., and Muskegon (MI) Chronicle.
>
> Two other papers that backed Bush in 2000 announced they would not pick either candidate this year: the Tampa Tribune and the Winston-Salem (NC) Journal.
>
> Among the papers endorsing Kerry today were newspapers in key swing states: The Miami Herald, St. Petersburg Times, Palm Beach Post, Daytona Beach News Journal and Bradenton Herald in Florida; the Minneapolis Star-Tribune in Minnesota; the Daily Camera in Colorado, the Dayton Daily News and Akron Beacon-Journal in Ohio, and Duluth (Minn.) News-Tribune.
>
> He also got the nod from major papers in states already friendly to him: The New York Times, The Boston Globe, San Jose Mercury-News, San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, Fresno Bee and Modesto Bee.

> Other papers backing him were the Kansas City Star, the Roanoke (Va.) Times, the Grand Fords (ND) Herald, Charlotte Observer, the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader, the Mail-Tribune in Medford, Oregon, and the Press-Democrat in Santa Rosa, CA. Clearly, many papers in the Knight Ridder and McClatchy chains have rallied to his side.
>
> Besides the big city papers already mentioned, Bush won the Omaha World-Herald, The Freelance-Star in Fredericksburg, Va., the York (PA) Daily Record, The Repository in Canton, Ohio, The Times-Republic in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the New York Sun, the El Paso Times and Las Cruces Sun in Texas, and the News-Gazette in Champaign-Urbana, Ill.

Well, the \*Lone Star Iconoclast \* didn’t begin publication until December of 2000, so if it endorsed President Bush it was a little late (unless the Supreme Court was on their distribution list 😉 ). And don’t expect too many more endorsements, since most of their advertisers have pulled out and the few readers they had (about 400) are treating the paper like a hot cowpie on a cold morning.

Hmmm…what about the **Denver Post**? I notice that they specifically mention the **Denver Rocky Mountain News** and if one supports a candidate, than it would likely mean that both of them do. However, the Post is not mentioned at all and I would think if they were to choose between which one to name, that’d be it (since it’s the morning publication and the major masthead on Sunday - the RMN only has Saturday).

Sorry, a closer read of the article says “the publishers of the Lone Star Iconoclast endorsed Bush in 2000”. I guess they were working for a different paper at the time. My bad.
