Oh, c’mon… the joke about his first name being “Wire” was a MAD magazine joke from the early 60s.

And, yes, Gene Roddenberry (later of STAR TREK fame) wrote several of the episodes, including the one in the first season with the camel.

No joke, Dex. I personally thought that, and before the MAD one came out (which I don’t remember, though I was reading MAD at the time.

And despite Roddenberry’s frequent claim, he was not “head writer” on HGWT - in fact there was no head writer.

No joke, here either. Of course, sometime between age 6 and age 12, I figured out that “Wire” meant telegram rather than his first name!
