Sure the show was just on HBO, but people\* talked about it\* (the show itself, and probably that scene too) because the show would deal with things you just wouldn’t hear about elsewhere. I’m a pretty boring vanilla person and I’ve never seen an episode of _Sex In The City_ myself, but I knew that teabagging was a sexual term, probably from a combination of hearing people vaguely reference that scene, and from seeing **Pecker** in the theater. That 2M4M is more obscure, but hilarious too. I’m so utterly delighted watching all this foolishness from the right. They fucked everything up. Now we get to scorn them AND laugh at them. That’s awesome! ---

Wiki has a list of pop culture references to [teabagging](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teabagging). There’s not many in the list, but what is there is pretty mainstream. I think knowledge of the word goes a little beyond X-Box Live trashtalkers. ---

It took me a while to realize that 2M4M didn’t mean “Two Men For Marriage.” I didn’t know the other connotation of it until reading it here. I don’t like teabags anyway. I prefer loose leaf. ---

I remember watching John Waters’ “Pecker” on video about 10 years ago with my dad and a friend and after that we’d joke about “no teabagging” occasionally. Very few people would know what we meant. I’d say for the last 5 years or so this ceased to be the case. Not everyone knows what it means, and older more conservative people are less likely to know, but many many people do; enough, in my opinion, that it would be surprising if no one involved with the movement was aware that it had a sexual connotation. Furthermore, I don’t see why you’d use the term teabagging at all unless it was a term you were already familiar with. It seems like an unwieldy neologism otherwise. ---

Not sure there really are any “sexual” connotations. My son, the Err Apparent, was quite the fan of Halo 3 online, even after he got zapped and tea-bagged by a 12-year-old girl from Petaluma. Or maybe he was jelly-rolled… ---
