The percentages might give us an idea of how often it does or does not happen.
If a ricochet splits & several of the smaller bits bounce back & break skin, does that count?
Never been shot.
But have shot at someone on purpose. Wasn’t aiming hard, but wasn’t really NOT trying to hit him either. He really should not have said “You won’t use that thing”. My life much improved after that.
I would have included an option for “shot at, but missed”. Which I was, one night in Denver, in the mid-80’s. Drunk yahoo, was backing out of a driveway, had to stop to let me pass, apparently that set him off, for some reason.
Technically, I have been shot, but since its a bit of a stretch I haven’t voted in the poll.
Just down the road from my parents house is a shooting grounds (clay pigeon shooting with shotguns). Sometimes the shotgun pellets hit the trees in the hedge that runs alongside it, and richochet/fall into the road. I was hit on the top of the head once, it stung. So, despite the fact I’ve never seen a real working gun in this country I’ve been shot by one. I live in the UK, I’ve seen deactivated firearms in antique shops, but don’t remember seeing a live one. I have seen them in the hands of police at European airports.
Our neighbour didn’t fare so well. The previous owner of the shooting grounds was a bit cavalier. Despite the lanes alongside being littered with broken clays, he never did anything about it. The neighbour once took a clay pigeon to the head.
We already know it’s a rare thing, so again, what’s the point?
I’ve been shot at, but never actually hit.
I concur. I’ve been shot at and not hit, hit by a BB (I wouldn’t count something that bounced off my shirt), and had a gun held to my head (probably would have been hit and could only zombie post if he pulled the trigger). Even a few additional choices would have made the poll only marginally useful.
Boy, if that hanging statement doesn’t beg for a followup, I don’t know what does.
It went something like this…
Owww, what the fuck was that, shit I got shot, fuck that hurts (sees blood spurting out of wound and panic ensues) shit fuck shit fuck what the fuck happened, OK calm down get to hospital, shit fuck shit fuck again as I move around in small circles, Jesus calm the fuck down and do something about this, grab shirt and cover wound and think it better now that I can’t see it, get to car and go to hospital. Five hours of surgery and a week in the hospital and everything is good again.
The strangest part was not knowing what happened but feeling the sensation and seeing the blood. Weird!
Hit by shotgun pellets while small game hunting. The thick brush-proof clothing kept them from penetrating. I’ve been hit by bullet fragments a couple times. Happily, the couple assholes who deliberately and knowingly pointed guns at me lacked the requisite naddage to actually pull the trigger. I hope for this trend to continue.
Some asshole got in my way when I was trying to back outa my driveway one time…
But, seriously, I did shoot directly at someone once. I was willing to take the small chance of actually hitting and killing them. I didnt WANT to kill, but I was trying to make the very serious point I wasnt fucking around anymore. I kinda hoped just getting the draw on him and pointing the gun at em would do it. When he commented that I wouldnt use it…well that just confirmed there was an additional point that still needed to be made. Least he did have the sense to not comment on my poor aim, cause I woulda addressed that issue as well at that point.
When I was 16 or 17 a buddy of mine and I stayed at his mountain cabin one weekend. We decided to do a bit of exploring, and got turned around in the forest; eventually we found a dirt road, and were able to figure out where we were. While walking back to his property, we started hearing gunshots close by, and could “see” the bullets whizzing through the leaves above us. Not knowing what was going on, we freaked and hit the deck. Just then a pickup truck came along, and it turned out to be my buddy’s grandfather. The shooting had stopped, but we jumped in the bed and flattened ourselves down for the ride back.
Afterward, when we thought it through, we realized whoever had been shooting wasn’t aiming for us, but probably just trying to scare us off. We figured one of the locals was probably growing weed nearby, and saw a couple of teenagers, and wanted to discourage us from remaining in the area.
Shot at (not me personally, my tank), but I have no idea if any of them even hit.
Even if they did, I wouldn’t know (or care); according to other tank crews in my unit I talked to who knew they’d been hit by MG fire, they said that, unlike movies, there’s no metallic “tink-tink-tink” noise of bullets bouncing off of several feet of frontal armor.
Now the heavy mortar rounds they dropped on us, that was another matter…
Heard lots of gunfire. Don’t think any of it was aimed at me. Some rockets came in my general direction and landed sort of close. The life of a Fobbit.
Shot in the throat and chest with a paintball gun. The chest shots hurt a little but didn’t leave much of a mark. The throat shot was much worse. It sent me straight to my knees and I struggled to breathe for several minutes.
Once, Swore, shot back.
Can you hear anything over the noise of the engine? I suspect the turbine engine int he M1 is quieter than the diesel-powered tanks I’ve ridden in, but it still seems likely to be louder than any incidental small arms fire.

I had an accidental discharge that sent a .22LR through my thumb. It was intensely painful.
So, I take it you give the experience only a 1.5 thumbs up rating ?
It missed the bone and just made a hole that has since healed.
