Have you ever been to Niagara Falls?

My wife and I took a trip to Toronto for our wedding anniversary a few years ago. As part of that trip, we drove down to the Canadian side of the falls, then spent the afternoon and evening in Niagara-on-the-Lake, which was very lovely. The falls themselves were amazing, but the tourist trap all around it, not so much.

I’ve been to both sides a zillion times. I grew up in a small town south of Buffalo, and nearly every year I was in school our annual field trip was either to the Falls or the Buffalo Zoo. Then when you turn 19 you can drink in Canada, so it was a frequent destination. Canadian side had some fantastic strip clubs too, so that helped.

Last time I went was a few years ago, since now I’m living in Wisconsin. Went home to visit my folks and while there my wife, mom, and I hit up the Falls.

Every once in a while someone will mention to me how they’re going to go see it, and I try to be excited for them but I struggle.

Not yet. It was never of interest as a long destination, and I never traveled closer than NYC.

But I’ve been interested in seeing it, both US and CA sides, since we moved here. Unfortunately, it’s just a little too far for a day trip and there still isn’t interest in a multi-day trip up there, nor any close trip for any other purpose.

One day. Hope it doesn’t dry up before then.

I am always amazed to re-learn that the Falls are on a short river between two lakes. I always envision it as some great outpouring more directly to the sea.

We had relatives who lived in Buffalo, so we hit the Falls two or three time during trips to visit the folks. I think the last time I went, I was less than 12 years old, so, maybe late '60s.

Niagara Falls also was my first International border crossing. Exotic Canada! I was fascinated.

I’ve since been to Victoria Falls as well.

You better hurry.

Heh. I actually remember that.

Once, way back when I was about 7 or 8. First time in Ontario. We drove by it late at night (for a kid). I can hardly remember it- just the light of the city heading towards it, and a glimpse of the US.

Lots of travel from Michigan to the New England.

One of the easiest routes is right through Niagara.

Also wen several times as a kid. I even went the year they turned it off

Why does this have me singing, “The niiiiiiggght they turned Niagara off…”

I used to live in Buffalo and went there regularly with visitors, most recent was a family trip to Buffalo / Niagara Falls / Welland Canal in November 2014.

Been there a few times, both sides, last time was about 10 years ago. Did all the usual stuff - Maid of the Mist, straddling the border on the bridge, Imax theater. Nice place to spend a day, then drive on to Toronto.

  1. Went over to view it from the Canadian side (it doesn’t look like very much at all from the US-ian side). Made sure my visa was multiple entry first.

Only once, both sides back in 1960. As it happened, that was just after the boy survived the plunge.

I’ve been to the Canadian side many times, but never to the US side. I hear I’m not missing much.

Wasn’t that the plot of a Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon or something?

Been to both sides a handful of times; have only crossed the land border once in each direction. Last time must have been around '07. Spring and Summer visits.

You get hamburgs on the Canadian side.

So why did it become such a traditional honeymoon destination? My theory has always been the noise of the falls drowns out cries of passion.

Plan on coming out next Memorial Day weekend; I’ll be there just like the past x years.

Been there a couple of times and on both sides. In 1973 and 1989.
