Canal boat ride in Amsterdam.

Couldn’t see much plopped down in a covered boat. Too far down in the water.

Maybe a different kind of conveyance or operator would do a better job. Or maybe it was the end of a long 2 week European trip.

I have lived on many coasts near many oceans and assorted bodies of water but just never developed a taste for seafood.

I went net fishing with family on a small boat in Norway last year. I felt social pressure to eat the fish we caught and it actually tasted good.

That was my most recent seafood meal lol.

Fish is seafood right?

“seafood” is incredibly diverse. Much more so than mammal flesh, bird flesh, or even both of them together.

Aww, sad, that’s one of my all-time favorite paintings (the Dali one)!

It seems so much of art is just a tribal popularity contest =/

All that’s left of the original mission is the chapel and a barracks, smack in the middle of urban development. After waiting in line and baking in the San Antonio sun for an hour, the entire “tour” takes about eight minutes. Do not recommend.

Even after being warned that it was small and in the middle of urban chaos, it was still disappointing. A complete waste of time.

> A friend of mine was underwhelmed by the Grand Canyon. He said it was an impressively big hole in the ground, but still just a hole in the ground.

I always thought that would be my reaction as well, I went the first time out of mere curiosity and to sort of tick it off the list (“Yep, I saw it. Big hole in the ground”). I ended up completely blown away. In person it was overwhelmingly **GRAND**.

But mileage obviously varies. I now realize I am more easily enthralled by certain natural spectacles than my would-be-blasé twenty-something self thought I would be. Your friend just has a superior level of blasé compared to me 😉.

One of these days I’m going to have to make it to the commonly derided Niagara Falls and see if it does anything for me.

As mentioned above, you have to go to the Canadian side. The contrast with the US side is actually kind of hilarious. The US side is mostly just a run-down small downtown area, like so many other blighted cities in the US, which just happens to be adjacent to some waterfalls. The Canadian side, we’ve actually made an effort to make it look nice, and showcase the Horseshoe Falls in a way that really impresses.

I’d rework that slightly as

No reason I can see for art to be different than any other mass preference.

Not for me. I’m not into steak and the first time I had Ruth’s Chris I thought, “Now I get it. This is why people like steak.”

It didn’t do it for me. We have a favorite steakhouse we’ve been going to since I was a kid. It was established in the late 1920s, and they dry age their beef. I’ve never had a bad steak there, and people who say filet mignon is tasteless? Their’s is definitely not. We decided to try a few of touted steakhouses and went to Ruth’s Chris and The Palm. Neither were impressive, and the taste was nothing out of the very ordinary. Sides also ordinary. We decided not to go to Morton’s, because it was a lot more expensive, and I didn’t want to pay that much for another disappointment.

Not a steakhouse, but Campanile had a prime rib that was awesome. Sadly, Campanile is gone.

Threadjack: A woman on another website said that her retirement village had an art contest, with all the artworks identified, and she was annoyed that all three ribbon winners were men. I wasn’t the only person who told her that maybe it wasn’t misogyny, but that maybe her fellow residents really did like the men’s artworks better?

As for Scanga Meat, right now anyway, all they have is a homepage online. Maybe they’re taking some time off?

Same here. Seafood restaurants are sort of hard on me. I will cook salmon or crab legs for my wife though.

Ah, well, you know, if you had ever been beside my brother driving, you would take a tour around a racing course in Mallorca as a relaxing exercise. The difference being, of course, that Walter Röhrl is a good driver.

My brother, Godott have mercy of his ignorance! would probably claim that the greatest rally driver was Carlos Sainz, but the Spanish online edition of [Motorsport](https://lat.motorsport.com/wrc/news/wrc-10-mejores-pilotos-historia-rally-mundial/10554637/) only ranks him third (and Röhrl fifth!). Number 2 would be Sébastien Ogier and number 1 Sébastien Loeb. YMMV, literally (pun intended, sorry for that).

Success is _not_ triggering a landslide or avalanche by your car leaving the course. I think he won by a mile. Or maybe a kilometre.

For some positive holiday underwhelm, we had to go to Costco yesterday and I was fully prepared for a horror show. All the internet memes and mentioning it to someone was like announcing that I’d be charging the trenches. But we parked a minute walk from the store, got the couple of things we needed and got out with minimal fuss or effort. No insane crowds or long lines; in fact, I went to grab a last thing as my wife went to go wait in line and I just barely made it back to her before her turn.

My local Costco (we’re out of town right now) is also seemingly tame compared to stories everyone else seems to have. It gets busy but not in a newsworthy way. Not sure if I have a higher crowd tolerance threshold or if I just live a charmed retail life.

I went to the supermarket on Tuesday, expecting it to be a zoo. But the shop was staffed up, and organized, and my wait was probably shorter than average.
