I inherited one. My great-grandfather came to America over 100 years ago; his sister went to Australia a few decades later. The siblings wrote letters (early on with the help of priests due to illiteracy); later, their children wrote letters to each other, and I started writing around 1980. Keep in mind that neither I nor my parents had ever met these people, and my grandmother only once as a teenager in the 1930s. We finally met in person in 2006, 99 years after the original immigration. We mostly phone now, but we’re still in touch.

Back in the 80s when I was maybe 12, I had met a girl at a hotel in exotic St. Louis. Nothing romantic (even by age 12 in 1985 standards) and I think she was a couple years younger than me. But we hung out by the pool and talked and afterward, when we were separated by the distance between Chicago, IL and Canton, OH, we sent letters. We probably wrote for a few months before it dwindled out and I don’t even remember her name but I did spare a thought for her last winter when a trip had me drive past Canton.

At the 1964-65 World’s Fair in New York, the Parker Pen pavilion sponsored a service to set you up with pen pals, presumably in a bid to sell more pens

I got a British girl named Rosemary. We corresponded for several months.

I had one in the late '70s or so. We connected the “Big Blue Marble” TV show. I think she was from Chicago (I was in the northeast).
