I was the sales manager for the branch off a a US company in Japan.
Once I was on a sales call and a guy comes into the conference room. We start to talk and I realize it was a guy I had interviewed for a sales position in my company. I had passed on him and then later he had gotten a job with my customer! Fortunately, we were all able to laugh.
My customer asked why I had passed on him because he was pretty knowable about the market and products and had good English – which was rare in that field. I didn’t really share my major concern, that the guy had had a string of jobs from one to two years and nothing longer than that.
Sure enough, within about 18 months, he was gone.
