> I was a line cook in a fairly popular restaurant in my home town. I thought I was a very good one too, and apparently management thought so as well.
>
> There was a convention in town and I noticed that the let out time for the schedule posted in the break room was 4:00. I asked the manager on duty to call in more people, because we would be getting hit about quarter after 4:00. The manager did manage to get a full compliment of dining room staff, so I was hopefully that the dish washer and a second line cook would be coming soon. (The 2 - 10 shift usually worked alone in the kitchen from 2 - 5).
>
> Right on time, the orders started coming in. I had all the grills up and running and was keeping up with the food orders. I had the window stacked with plates for delivery and still more orders coming in. Dishes were starting to back up because I had no time to do dishes and cook. I don’t know how long I lasted alone, it felt like an eternity, but still no help in the kitchen area.
>
> Then the worst thing to happen, happened. I ran out of plates. So I ran over to try to get some cleaned, and got called back to the line and chewed out for not being on the line when we were so busy. I asked how much longer until help arrived, and she said she hadn’t called any help in for the kitchen. At this point I left. Yes I felt bad, I was in tears, and I still regret walking out to this day.

Oh my Gosh! I must repeat!

Nonesense! You do not deserve to feel any guilt. They got what they deserved and they would have deserved to have gotten a whole lot worse from you.

There as a TV show about ten years ago about some New York City restaurant run by a famous chef and it portrayed all the difficulties involved in running a restaurant.

My most favorite episode involved one of the female wait staff walking out without any notice. They called this the “Mashing of the Bananas” because when she left, she threw a bunch of bananas on the floor and then stomped on them making a big squishy mess.

Did anyone ever see that? Was very, very funny. IMHO, once again, the restaurant fully deserved what they got and would have deserved a whole lot more.

I’ve only walked off of one job in my life. Part time job, selling ice cream off a truck. I went in to load my truck one morning and found that half the drivers were gone because the place had been raided - they were all selling drugs as well as ice cream. I turned around and walked out when I heard that.

Yes

1. When I was in HS I worked at a burger place. One night the male assistant manager got very weird and was touching me in an inappropriate way. I walked out.
2. All my friends were working second jobs cleaning offices. I did it one night. I was horrified that I was given one rag to clean EVERYTHING:smack: I did not come back the next night.
3. I had been temping at my former employer for about three months. I was scheduled to start a new assignment with them on a Monday when I was offered a really great position at a new company. Unfortunately they wanted me to start the same Monday. In this case I called the old company and they were happy for me that I got a new job.

Kind of.

This past May I was still living in Michigan, and I had told my job that I was leaving to move back to Ohio in April or May. May comes along and I tell them May 24 will be my last day, I’m moving back to Ohio on the 25th. I reminded them a week before, as they had not hired a replacement, and they said that they knew. May 26th my boss sent me a text asking why I hadn’t shown up for work. I called her back, to tell her I told her for over a month I was leaving on May 24, but she blocked my number. According to friends who worked there, I decided to stop coming in, and left them short handed. Since she blocked my number, I figured not my problem anymore.

Cook/kitchen manager at a resort hotel. Came in one evening to start dinner prep and the food-beverage manager had all the kitchen implements hauled into a conference room because the exterminators were coming. She told me, “Just tell me what you need and I’ll go get it.” I left.

She was a barely functional alcoholic, and the place closed not long after.

That reminds me, I’ve just remembered that I’ve actually done it twice.

The first time was when I was seventeen. I was working as a washer-upper and KP at a pub restaurant. I earned next-to-jack-shit and I washed every single thing by hand. The management were this ob-fucking-noxious couple. She was the chef and he ran the bar. She was miserable to work with and did things like drop the chef’s knife under the suds without telling me, then bitch me out for bleeding into the sink. He had one of those horrible nasal British voices and was a boring, racist, sneering twerp. I hated them.

My school crush had enquired if I was going to such-and-such new year’s party as she’d be there. This was a huge deal for a young lad - so I told them I couldn’t work that night. They begged me. I refused. They offered me double-time. I still refused. Then they offered me a cut of the tips, which I never normally got. That would be a huge chunk of change for me, and I was saving for a car, so eventually I conceded.

New year’s eve was busy as hell and the night was long and terrible, and I didn’t get home until 4am. When I got my pay packet later that week it was only single time. I asked about the double-time and they said that my extra wage would be made up from the tips. That hadn’t been our deal but I was too naive to argue about it.

The tip jar was a gallon bottle on the bar and it was nearly full - notes too. I asked when they would count it but they were “too busy”. This went on and on for several weeks.

After about two months I finally realised that I would never get the extra money I had been promised. And my crush was now with someone else. I was so, so angry, in the way that only the impotent rage of the jilted adolescent can achieve.

Then I heard that the school rugby team was having its annual dinner at the pub. Being at school with these hoodlums, I knew how badly that evening would fare for the pub. So I plotted my revenge: I didn’t turn up.

The rugby team trashed the joint, had a food fight, tipped pints of beer over each other, and played frisbee with the owners’ antique plate collection. The kitchen was chaos because nobody was washing up, and one of the players reduced the chef to tears by lifting a fillet steak from the plate with his fingers before it was even on the table and swallowing it whole.

I never went back. Petty, I know, and I regret never telling them why I’d “rather left them holding the baby” as the owner whined when he called to complain.

I’ve walked out of two jobs.

I went back to college as an older student and had a pretty cool part time job refueling semi-tractors at a UPS terminal. Eventually I graduated and I expressed my interest to the trucking manager (UPS _does_ use engineers) while looking for professional employment. Got no feedback or referrals whatsoever. Looking around, I saw that out of about ~50 people I worked with only 1-2 had EVER progressed beyond high school. When a better job came along, I left a note in the managers box and never came back. Got a final check in the mail, never heard from HR.

A few years later I was a contract employee working for a manager of a certain ethnic group that tends to breed doctors and treats all subservient beings like crap. Finally one Monday morning I had a better job lined up. I called my contract house told them “bye”. Later they called back saying the manager thought he was going to have a heart attack and he couldn’t understand the problem. Too bad.

Oh many times! There are a lot of jerky people (bosses) out there. I am/was a computer/analyst, and lets see, I have walked out…hmmmm - maybe 6 times. The hard part for me is that I tend to need a lot of stuff, you know personal laptop, external hard drives, disks, hard copies of programs, knick knacks got my desk, books, a space heater. So I would plan a departure date. For a few days to a week before, I would clear out some junk each night. The fun part about this career, if you are good at it, is that nobody ever really knew what I was doing. There are many ways to sabotage programs. I never did that, BUT I took all my personal notes with me with and flow charts and my written documentation - not the documentation in the actual programs. In every case, the bosses were total jerks. I had nothing on my conscience when I walked out the door on that last day - never to return. \*\*

I just did this very thing Friday before last. I don’t regret it. I should have quit a year ago. I was planning to retire early at 55, and I just turned 53. I just couldn’t take the bullshit anymore, and certainly not for another two years. Financially speaking, I don’t actually have to work, so I’m not worried about burning bridges or whatever. And “Thanks Obama” for the ACA, I don’t have to worry about being able to get health insurance.

I was in my sophomore year and desperate for a job. I worked stocking shelves at the student store on campus. Carrying heavy boxes and running around from stock room to sales floor just wasn’t my thing. After the third day, I called in and quit.

A few years later, I answered a paper ad for door-to-door sales of educational books for families. I did the 3-day training and went out on the field in suburban Seattle. I was allowed into two homes for a presentation. Then the police stopped my colleague and I as we walked around the neighborhood. Apparently someone reported us. I quit the next day.

In college I got a job delivering pizzas. The manager screamed at and verbally abused everyone. I never went back for a second day’s work – didn’t say anything either.

I once gave like one day notice and I felt terrible about it. I accepted a job offer on Wednesday and HR says I have to start Monday. The place I was leaving was rightfully pissed. I show up at the new employer and my manager says, “we weren’t expecting you so soon!” Gee, thanks HR.
