A place called Portobello,Alaska … It would have to be big enough to hold several aircraft carriers including fleet escorts, supply ships and of course submarines. I know of no single port that big in Alaska Perhaps Portobella is just a code name instead of a real port in Alaska. I can’t find it on the map and if it is true … Why would the US Navy do such a thing? What would become of San Diego without the US Navy? Would Norfolk, Virginia be next with a move to Nova Scotia? Is this a wise move? Would San Diego then be removed from anyone’s target list? ---

I _think_ the OP is talking about shutting down the naval base in San Diego and replacing it with a base in Alaska, while leaving the city itself where it is. Which is moderately more sane than what he’s actually saying, though still probably crazy. ---

I shouldn’t have added Norfolk, Naval base to the rumor though … for it is the largest naval base in the world ---

Sounds like one of those crazy rumors that originates, propagates, and is mainly believed by E-2s in A-school. Edit: As far as moving the largest naval base in the world…Norfolking way that’d happen. ---

I haven’t even found this “rumor” on some of the nuttier web sites, (or any web sites, actually). The Navy is never going to move a major base (with a huge repair station) from a location with 365 day/year warm weather to a location where they would have to fight winter from four to six months a year. I suppose that there might be an occasion when a new small base would be opened and units from the larger base would be transferred there. There is no way the entire base is moving. ---

These rumors are completely false. What is true is that they are going to move the naval base from Norfolk to New Haven, so that it’s closer to Skull and Bones. ---
