I have one of my credit cards memorized, also my employee number at work and my licence number. I used to remember every phone number that I ever needed but now I have to have my home and work numbers on my phone in case i am asked them.
Years ago, visiting a friend, I accompanied him while he transacted some business. He was asked for his licence number and, before he could get his licence out, I told him what it was. He was dumbfounded that I knew it, forgetting that 30 years before he and I had both stood in a queue to get our interstate licences replaced with local ones. And in those days of paper licences and hand stamps it was pretty obvious that his was going to be one number after mine.
I remember being surprised when my credit card was first reissued that it kept the same 16 digit number as before, because this isn’t true for my debit cards. So I’ve never quite managed to memorise most of my debit card numbers over the years, but the credit card is easy after 12+ years of use - only the CVV and expiry dates keep changing and they are obviously much easier to relearn.
I feel like I am in a time warp or something. Doesn’t everyone’s browser remember all their information and credit card numbers for them?
When I get to the internet page where I have to fill out name, address, CC number, expiration date, I just type like one letter and it give me the option to fill it out automatically. I click yes and it is all done. It is wonderful.
I used to have my main cards memorized. But once the mass thievery of CC numbers started a decade-ish ago and my main card was replaced 5 times in 4 years, I pretty well gave up on even trying to memorize it.
In recent months/years my password vault and phone e-wallet know all that crap. So just like phone numbers, I no longer even have an inkling of what they might be.
I wouldn’t have been able to before the pandemic hit. I never used to order takeout over the phone. I enjoy having a reason to get out of the house and have a server look after me for a bit. The pandemic has given me so many opportunities recently to read my card number over the phone to my favorite pizza joint that, yeah, I can recite it now.
