Hawaii travel questions.

I think it was on the big Island but there was a very remote green sand beach and a less remote red sand beach. Just dont step on the nudists.

Do you have any relatives or friends here (I live on Oahu)? You could impose for a few days! You should see some of the sights on Oahu; Arizona, North Shore beaches, the scene at Waikiki. Then spend a few days on Maui. Crater trip, enjoy the beaches, good food and live music scene. You can use Airbnb, roommate, or Craigslist for less rooming expenses. If you have a Costco/Sams Club - food you prepare is the same as mainland. You can get pupus (appetizers) reasonable especially early evening.

Hmm, unless you only went to one island, I’m guessing that the green sands beach was on the Big Island and the red sand beach on Maui (at the end of the road to Hana).

There are several green-ish sand beaches on the Big Island (Anaeho’omalu, which is near Kings and Queens Shopping Centers in Waikoloa Beach, is fairly accessible, and while it’s mostly beige sand there are spots with a distinct greenish cast), but “the” beach is a bit of a hike down near the southern end of the island.

If anyone is aware of any other red sand beaches aside from the one around Hana on Maui, let me know! I was very disappointed in that one; it wasn’t really sand, just reddish-brown gravel.

Yeah, its actually gravel but we ended up with a collection. We found white, black, yellow, red, and green sand. The green sand was this very remote beach we hiked a couple of miles and climbed down a cliff to get to.

BTW, does a Verizon cell phone plan work in Hawaii or do you have to get another plan?

I recall there are some really cheap food deals to be found in Waikiki if you hit the area at the right time.

As for colored-sand beaches, the future wife and I camped out on a nice black-sand beach on the Big Island, but it’s since been covered by a lava flow.

There are also – or were – a couple of youth hostels on Oahu. One in Waikiki and one up in the Manoa Valley by the university. I stayed at the latter for a few days upon my arrival in Honolulu before my first semester started. It’s a “youth” hostel, but there didn’t appear to be any age restrictions. (I was 33 at the time and far from the youngest one staying there.)

You probably know this already Sam, but for those who may not - there are LOTS of black sand beaches on the Big Island so if you are bummed to read that the beach is no longer, take heart - there are plenty of others.

Now I’m gonna have to check the news and see which beach you are referring to - come to think of it, the famous Punalu’u beach (I may be spelling it wrong) might have been in the line of “fire.” I hope it wasn’t that one! ::runs off to Google::

…back from Google…

Punalu’u (which I did spell correctly without looking up, she said, patting herself on the back) seems to be fine, whew.

How long ago was that camping trip, Sam? If you camped before 1990, maybe it was this one: Kaimū, Hawaii - Wikipedia

If its the area I remember the snorkeling was good.

Even better, I could rent prescription swim goggles.

No, I believe it was mid-1992. I think the beach we were on disappeared maybe a year later. In 1990, I was still here in Thailand from the first time I lived here.
