I would choose Blu ray
I chose wisely… I chose HD DVD.
Given the fact that I have my HD DVD collection sitting on a drive on my media center, completely free of DRM and encryption… with the ability to easily move these to any media player I see fit… I haven’t made a poor choice. I will be able to watch the media that I PAID FOR in the manner that I see fit for the unforseeable future.
You see, I’m not a big fan of limiting fair use… which is the primary reason why Fox and Disney chose Blu-Ray in the first place. Granted, the current BD+ implementations are few and far between, but I tell you now - brace yourselves for some serious DRM issues with Blu-Ray.
With the current major recording companies dropping DRM on downloadable content to allow people to copy their media to portable devices, i’m surprised that consumers are quick to adopt such draconian video formats… because one day there will come a time when video fair use will be a concern.
So yeah, I chose wisely. I’ll never have to worry about not being able to play the HD DVD media I purchased.
Not necessarily so with Blu-Ray.
I chose both formats.
I first had the HD-DVD addon for my Xbox360 but it was so loud, I could barely hear the dialogue in movies.
I really, really doubt that Blu-Ray has already won as most of the content available is for HD-DVD.
I have about 13 Blue-Ray discs, against 27 HD-DVDs.
Blu-Ray doesn’t have the Matrix trilogy or Transformers, the Harry Potter series is much more expensive.
It is starting to look like HD-DVD will win the war over here in Europe.
That’s too bad. I haven’t been following the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battles* but I did remember having read about the promise of cheap HD movie media so I posted a link I found on Google.
*My HD decision making will occur next January since I am waiting for the Super Bowl sale prices of 2009 to buy a HDTV. (fingers-crossed)
Yep. Day after the announcement, I scooped up every piece of no-longer-needed video game paraphernalia, brought them to Gamestop for trade in, and bought me a PS3 for a perfectly reasonable price. Hairspray looks amazing on it.
Fah… I like my HD DVD.
No Region Codes Meaning I can get HD DVD titles not available in North America and have no problem playing them. I like the PIP and menu options.
I wish they had a higher capacity but still…
I’m annoyed by the number of times people claim one format is dead or another. Plus I’m pissed Warner did this! Sigh. I guess I’ll have to settle with what I have and in the end I’ll boycott buying any movies from Warner after they cease the HDDVD titles. As a film nut that’s a 40 plus units a year they will not get from me.
On the other hand if the war is over there will be plenty of titles in teh cheapie bin for me to pick through
Why? That seems like a rather pissy, pointless, immature response to a completely impersonal business decision. You knew the dice you were rolling when you volunteered to be an “early adopter”.
As a consumer I have the right to choose what I will or will not purchase. I figure why should I validate their decision by continuing to support the product. If I want to watch one of their movies I can still rent I just will not buy a copy.
But what’s the message you’re sending by going out of your way to avoid their products? That their decision was morally wrong?
I choose neither. Until the price drops on the DVDs themselves, I’m not even going to give either format a second thought. $30-40 per disc for movies I already own is not worth it.
The affordable home PC recordable drive, whenever it gets released, will decide the format for me. I want to buy a spindle of a single media type for all of my data needs (movies, photos, archive, programs, etc), that will play on both my PC and my living room player. I also want the capability of copying my old DVD movie library over to the new format discs without paying again for all new content…classic players will disappear fast once the shift occurs.
I held out on the whole DVD+ vs DVD- issue until the combo players and recorders made the issue moot.
Blu-Ray PORN!
Morally wrong? Naw. I’m just a pissed off consumer who blames the company for making my purchase obsolete earlier than promised. Wait they did promise to stay purple for the forseeable future back in December so they did lie to me unless the forseeable future happened to be four #% Weeks!!!
I’m another who’s struggling to see the point of upgrading to technology that is barely different to what I already have. The TV I have in my room and which I watch most of my DVDs on is only 18", I very much doubt I’d notice the difference with blu-ray or HD and I don’t have the space to upgrade to something else. Given that DVD has a high quality and plenty of options (more than I use most of the time - I can’t remember the last time I watched something with the director’s commentary or watched a behind the scenes thingy) I’m not convinced I need anything better.
Toshiba Launches HD DVD Player Fire Sale
I’m not sure this move counts as “fighting back” – more like “oh, crap, we have warehouses of these damned things!”
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
The same choice that I made.
That was almost profound.
