Round 7. ****
1. **Chester Taylor** Moridwon (Hamlet)
2. **Rob Bironas** DrewBrees'Birthmark
3. **Torry Holt** Varlos' Zzzzzzz
4. **Domenik Hixon** Crabby Hermits
5. **Michael Jenkins** New York Fanboys
6. **Wes Welker [sup]K[/sup]** Spiritus Mundane
7. **Fred Jackson** RealCarmenOfGenius
8. **Brandon Marshall [sup]K[/sup]** Fightin' Quakers
9. **Dallas Clark [sup]K[/sup]** 9 Inch Neils (RNATB)
10. **Baltimore** Fourth & Nineteen
11. **Jamaal Charles** Off Constantly
12. **Chris Cooley** Quentin's JAMmers
13. **Philadelphia** Baltimore Weirdos
14. **Philip Rivers [sup]K[/sup]** Omni's Omnipotents

```
**Keepers** : Wes Welker, Brandon Marshall, Dallas Clark, Philip Rivers
Another nice crop of keepers as you’d expect. I think Rivers is the best of the group. Welker has been nursing an injury but even still I expect to see a close approximation of the 2007 Pats this year. Clark will be solid though as I’ve noted I expect a step back from the Colts O. Marshall is the real wildcard with his suspension and all, but supposedly contract talks have started in the last few days so perhaps the rift will be smoothed over. However, Orton isn’t Cutler and that’s not liable to be smoothed over any time soon.
**Best Pick(s)**: Chris Cooley
I’m not particularly high on Cooley, never really have been to be honest, but I’ve yet to see him ranked lower than 7th on any list of fantasy TEs and considering the guys who were kept and taken several rounds earlier this is a nice value. People seem to think last years dip in TDs was a bit of a fluke and not a result of the change in scheme and new HC. I think him getting 5+ TDs is going to be a stretch, but 800 yards are likely.
**Worst Pick(s)**: Rob Bironas, Michael Jenkins
Kicker in the 7th. Nuff said. The Jenkins pick is particularly perplexing though. He wasn’t even as good as Justin Gage last season and they’ve added Gonzo to the arsenal. By most accounts Jenkins is going to be the odd man out and see his targets diminish. But even if he were to match his output last season he’d still be a reach here. There are literally dozens of WRs on the board here with more value.
**Most Upside** : Jamaal Charles
This is a pretty easy choice. No one seems very high on LJ and Charles is the guy that’s a better fit in the offense. I’m not convinced he has the punch to really be an impact starter but he is a better fit for the spread. If LJ gets hurt or leaves KC next season it’s Charles who will benefit. I’m not sure he’ll ever rise to be a fantasy starter but perhaps an occasional flex guy and at this point that’s a solid value.
**Biggest Risk** : Domenik Hixon
Marshall probably qualifies as a risk, but if he weren’t a keeper drafting him in this round would be universally applauded as a great gamble so I’ll leave him out. Hixon doesn’t have any specific red flags but the situation in NY is so uncertain surrounding the WRs that drafting any of them is a risk. Who knows which guy is going to be successful, hell, who knows which guys will even get on the field. Might be Hixon, might be Smith and Nicks, might be Manningham and Barden. Taking any of them is a risk I’d avoid since the upside isn’t exactly a pot of gold.
**Keeper Potential** : Jamaal Charles and last year’s keepers again.
Covered Charles already and I think all the keepers this year will warrant serious consideration to be kept again. Only Clark would be reaching the area where the your benefits are moot.
**My Pick** : Philip Rivers
Acquired Rivers in the trade for Roddy White in the middle of last season. He’s a steal with 7th round eligibility. I’ll be counting on regular 25+ point outings with that stout offense and awful division. A lot of my teams success relies on him being healthy and productive and he’s never given any reason for doubt. I’ve landed Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates in other leagues so I’ll be cheering this passing game on pretty much all season.
There were other factors. You also traded me your second best WR (I forget who, but he was right around 10th best in the league at that point, while White was top 3 or 4), and I was making a playoff push but had two really good QBs of roughly equal value (Rivers and Rodgers) with terrible WRs. At the time, at least one person suggested that the trade was really skewed in my favor.
But yes, you did get more keeper value out of the deal.
IIRC, you traded Roddy White, Jerricho Cotchery and Rivers for Big Ben, Steve Breaston and Chris Chambers.
It was me that suggested that and it turns out I was totally right. 😃
Omni gave: Big Ben, White and Breaston
Varlos gave: Rivers, Chambers and Cotchery
Breaston had no keeper value as a FA pickup. Ironically I had drafted Cotchery originally and flipped him for Mendenhall on draft day which turned out to be a huge mistake. Weird that Cotchery and I seem inextricably linked in this league.
Well, considering we finished 6th and 7th respectively I think the 2008 value is pretty much a wash (also Big Ben, Chambers, Cotchery and Breaston were all pretty disappointing following the deal) and considering only 2 players in that deal were keeper-worthy the impact on this year is the deciding factor. I knew the minute I made that deal that Rivers was the only piece that mattered, I’d have taken him straight up for those 3 players and felt like a winner.
3. (36) Hines Ward - Bwuh? Ward’s production has declined every year, and I have to believe his uptick last year was an aberration.
Bit of a brainfart, but Football Outsiders projections are okay with the pick.
Cause he was hurt. I’m betting he’s their staring RB next year, and I’ll be keeping him.
> 1. (105) Derrick Mason - You like old wideouts. Derrick Mason is reliable, but he actually pulled a Favre and retired and unretired in the offseason. Doubt he’s got anything left.
Contract posturing. He’s a lock for 800-1000 yards as a 3rd WR.
Decent chance to be starting in 2010.
Not as a last-rounder in a keeper league. But I ended up dropping him to get a K.
Agreed. Throwing out a “worst pick ever” for a 15th rounder in a 14 team league is just dumb, RTNAB.
I wish we had DL slots in football. Anyone wanna tell me why we don’t?
Hey kids. Never figured to be the type to flake out on an entire fantasy season, but here I am. I want to apologize to you all, even though I don’t imagine I’m _quite_ irreplaceable.
Also, thanks **Ellis** for reaching out to me, and sorry I didn’t get in touch sooner. Bar exam + something less than greatest economy ever + student loans coming due = holy fuck, what do you mean it’s September already?
Anyway, I’m going to observing from afar starting now. It’s easier to make fun of somebody when you don’t have a team for them to beat.
**Munch** , there’s no DL in the NFL, so there’s no way to prevent abuses of a DL slot. If a guy is on injured reserve, he isn’t coming back that season so there’s no reason to keep him around, and if he isn’t on injured reserve, that means he’s an active player, even if he’s listed as OUT.
Now to find out who the god damn hell is on what team this year, and why the Eagles are going to pretend to be good but not be that good.
> The Bears D in the grand scheme of things is probably an even worse pick. Taking the top kicker insanely early is painful but at least you are assured of getting steady top production for it. You over spent, but at least you got something good. The Bears D on the other hand isn’t likely to be very good this year. Perhaps they underachieved in the preseason due to a lack of urgency from a bunch of veterans but I saw some serious issues last season and not a one of them was adequately addressed. The pass rush and secondary are deeply flawed even when healthy and they aren’t healthy now. Not only did you over spend for a defense, you overspent for a defense that will be mediocre at best and potentially quite poor in an explosive division. When you can have negative scores that an especially bad thing.
>
> My pessimism on the Bears defense could be misplaced. I desperately hope that it is. However if I’m right this is the worst pick of the draft.
Could be. FWIW, my picks were very, very heavily influenced by Football Outsider’s picks, and they had the Bears as the #1 D.
Now _really_ dumb was the first year of this league, when I drafted Marcel Shipp in the third round … just after a season-ending injury.
Really? the Football Outsiders are usually pretty decent, I can’t fathom how they’d come to that conclusion. I would love it if they are right, but of all my 2009 predictions this is the one I’m most confident in. And I say this as a dyed in the wool old school Bears fan that has fever dreams of the great defenses over the years.
Man I hope we’re not embarrassed in Green Bay. Even if we win the game, giving up 30+ points would be a bitter pill.
They had Bears, Chargers, Ravens, then a big drop off.
I think they project the Bears offense to be so much better that the D will be playing with a lead a lot. I think that’s sound. “Best fantasy defense” is not the same as “best defense.”
No worries. Sorry life piled on right at the worst possible time for FF; that sucks. Hopefully things mellow out over the next couple months so you can at least enjoy real, actual football. Most pundits are picking the Eagles to win the East, so there’s that. Not sure if that’s actually a good thing, though, since it’s been several years since a concensus has correctly predicted the NFC East winner. (Last time might have been the Eagles when the rest of the division sucked. 2004 maybe?)
**Week 3 Fastest Ever Recap!**
**9 Inch Neils** sneak one over **DrewBrees’Birthmark** in the pillowfight of the week (71-70), despite getting a combined _1.2_ points out of Frank Gore and Larry Johnson and being Marion Barberless. My draft strategy is designed to put the best team on the “field” at the end of the season, not the beginning, so a 2-1 start is all gravy, especially considering I would have lost to all but three teams this week, and happened to be playing one of them.
**Spiritus** squishes **Moridwon** thanks to a dominating performance from the Giants’ D and DeSean “remembered to hold ball until after crossing goal line” Jackson.
**Varlos’ZZZZZZZZZ** squishes **Fourth and Nineteen** even more convincingly behind 30+ point performances from Aaron Rodgers and MJD. **VZ** also posted the high score of a relatively low-scoring week, with 133 points.
**Baltimore Weirdos** a/k/a “Peyton Manning and some guys from Baltimore” wins easily over **New York Fanboys** , whose entire team seems to have taken an early bye week. Total lack of viable backup running backs taking an early toll, it seems.
**Fightin’ Quakers** and **Crabby Hermits** both got production out of nearly everyone, but Santana Moss’ huge day made the difference for **CM**. Raise your hand if you saw _that_ coming.
**Omni’s Omnipotents** got at least 5 points from everyone but the kicker (who had 4), which was enough to knock off **RealCarmenOfGenius** without drama.
Despite weak performances from keepers Matt Ryan and Calvin Johnson, **Off Constantly** posted 114 points, which was enough to counter **Quentin’s Jammers** and their so-so day.
One one team remains undefeated after just three weeks ( **VarlosZ’** ), and they are the highest scorers overall, so that seems about right. Elsewhere, **Ellis** is 2-1 despite the lowest overall score, and **furt** ’s Fightin’ Quakers are 0-3 despite the fifth-highest overall score.
Well, Crabtree is finally in camp. Now we see if my gamble in drafting him was worthwhile. Also with Edwards going to the Jets I’ll have to watch and see how this effects Cotchery. Lots of changes with the Omnipotents in the Bears bye week.
