About 15 years ago in Japan, there was an awful one called Cobra Whisky. But the label was waaaaaay cool. Like a film noir Bogart Sam Spade guy with a tommy gun and a dame. It was awesome. A friend of the family still has the unopened bottle in his collection. I just tried a google search but couldn’t find it.

any Japanese dopers out there ever seen Cobra Whisky?

It still can’t possibly be a worse hangover than a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20, lime-flavored. Ooof.

What I think is strange is that someone would choose to brand a 43% Alcohol Rotgut with a series of [toys](http://lightning.prohosting.com/~pwn/images/pwn/he-man.jpg) and [comic books](http://www.civilizedpigdom.com/motu/insect/insect00.html) marketed towards the 6 to 9 set? Are they thinking, “The kids that were into _He-Man_ & _She-Ra_ in the early 80’s will be drinking-age now… This is bound to appeal to them!”, or what?

I thought I’d check to see if the distillery offers any other unusual liquors. First stop, [their website](http://www.somindia.com/content/index.htm), which was a little disappointing. As a Canadian, I appreciated _Legend Rum:_

> [@](#):
>
> **The Legend that Canada sip**
>
> The world’s finest rums, anyone? Come to the renaissance of the spirit. Legend Old Vatted rum. From the subtle blend of the best sun-kissed sugarcane and handpicked molasses in Salwood Vats. For that exquisite character …lingering taste… and livelier body. You’ll soon discover, you are relishing every single sip of a rum… the one, recognized by the Liquor Control Board Ontario, Canada. Legend Old Vatted run. Set to take on the world by storm!

(The underlining is mine. What the hell is “handpicked molasses?”)

As it turns out, their website is quiet about some of the more interesting things about the company-- Looks like their main gig is [“Indian Made ‘Foreign Liquor’”](http://www.the-week.com/20may21/biz2.htm) and racketeering, and allegations have been made that they have connections to heroin and arms trafficking.

Recently, it was discovered that Som had [paid off](http://www.tribuneindia.com/20010831/main5.htm) high-level gov’t folks and the police:

> [@](#):
>
> [ul] **Names of top MP leaders’ in cash book.** [/ul]
> _Bhopal, August 30_
> The controversy over the alleged payoffs by a liquor baron has taken a dramatic turn with Lokayukta Faizanuddin’s disclosure that the seized cash book carries the names of several top brass of the ruling and the opposition parties in Madhya Pradesh.
>
> However, he refused to divulge the names of who received the payoffs running into crores.
>
> When contacted, Justice Faizanuddin told UNI here today that a high-level team of the Lokayukta, while examining the cash book with the Income Tax (IT) Department, found the names of several senior leaders of the ruling Congress and the main opposition BJP. The team had gone there to ascertain the authenticity of a photocopied document handed over to the Lokayukta by the IT Department.
>
> Besides, he said the cash book suggested the names of many officers of the excise and police and even human rights commission among those who were on the regular “payrolls” of Som Distilleries. All police stations in the area of operation of the distillery were regular recipients of monthly dole as well.
>
> However, he pointed out that the photocopied list of “beneficiaries”, given by the IT Department to the Lokayukta omitted many prominent names, which otherwise figured in the cash book. **UNI**

My roomate brought the label home, by the way. She works at an import craft store, and someone was using the labels as packing material. Hundreds of them. There’s a story there, somewhere.

Does anyone know anything else about the Som scandal?

Or alternately, any links to “wrong” liquor labels?
