> RIP George. He may not have been the most consistent, but at his best he was _the_ best, and one of the most important singers of the 20th century. Only Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, and possibly Willie Nelson, can compare in terms of influence.

From that generation, I’d throw Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings into the mix.

While very important, I’d put Haggard and Jennings on the next rung down,

[I Don’t Need No Rocking Chair](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPjbM-SqQUE) is one of my favorites that George did later in his career. He really lived up to that too. He was still touring up until a few weeks ago.

[George Jones & Georgette Jones - “You and Me and Time”](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICdDGZphspA)

Georgette reconnected with her dad just a few years ago. I’ve read they got pretty close since then. I really like Georgette’s music too.

You never really got George Jones’ music until you had had your heart broken. Sure, he did some fun stuff (_White Lightnin’_ is the first to come to mind) but his cry-in-your-beer-she-done-left-me-'cause-I-effed-up numbers were the ones that let you know that your weren’t alone in your heartbreak.

He was fun to jam with the one occasion I had to share the stage with him (totally by surprise, he showed up at BigBro’s small nightclub one night).

RIP, Possum ☹

[George himself begged to differ](http://youtu.be/xi3GgoLtlWk). 😉

George Jones is on my list of the three essential (male) country singers:

Hank Williams _legitimized_ country music.
George Jones _defined_ it.
George Strait _perfected_ it.
