> Awards in medical malpractice suits has increased about 10% in the last decade and malpractice premiums have increased about 100% in the last decade.

So clearly the problem is insurance companies exploiting doctors. Then of course being forced to carry it to operate in a hospital is perfect for those who sell it. So .you have to have it and insurance companies will charge a ton and get rich,. Insurance loots at all stages of healthcare.

Well, its not JUST the insurance carriers but it is a problem.

> I’d like to see the Republicans resurrect and get behind this [bill](http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s103-1770&tab=summary) that 20 Republican Senators proposed as an alternative to the 1993 Clinton Health Care Reform. It included:
>
> \*Title I - Basic Reforms to Expand Access to Health Insurance Coverage and to Ensure Universal Coverage
>
> Subtitle A - Universal Access
> Provides access to health insurance coverage under a qualified health plan for every citizen and lawful permanent resident of the United States.
>
> Section 1003 -
> Establishes a program under which persons with low incomes (and who are not eligible for Medicaid) will receive vouchers to buy insurance through purchasing groups.
>
> Section 1004 -
> Requires each employer to make available, either directly, through a purchasing group, or otherwise, enrollment in a qualified health plan to each eligible employee.
>
> Subtitle F - Universal Coverage
> Requires each citizen or lawful permanent resident to be covered under a qualified health plan or equivalent health care program by January 1, 2005. Provides an exception for any individual who is opposed for religious reasons to health plan coverage, including those who rely on healing using spiritual means through prayer alone.

> Of course, if you [compare](http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Graphics/2010/022310-Bill-comparison.aspx) it with the 2009 legislation, you might come to the conclusion that those 20 Republicans were secretly plotting a socialist takeover of the government…

It’s only missing two magic words “Life Panels”!

CMC fnord!
It’s hard to imagine that they could actually think they would get away with repealing “Obamacare” and replacing it with the exact same thing simply re-branded as “Republicare” and no one would notice . . . WTF am I thinking, this is America, of course they could. :smack: ☹

> Well that’s not really tort reform because it doesn’t put lawyers out of business. I posted earlier that tort reform doesn’t change doctor behaviour.

I appreciate that this is sarcastic, but it’s worth pointing out that it would put some lawyers out of business. The asshole ones. It’s a win-win. 😃

Tort reform along the line’s Orszag proposes would save a lot of money.

Actually, what you quoted is the Republican alternative to Clinton’s health care reform in **1993**. In other words, “Obamacare” is pretty much exactly what the Republicans proposed back when this subject was the hot topic…17 years ago.

Sharron Angle was promising repeal at a rally, according to CNN. OTOH, McCain, who was a speaker there, was calling her the “51st [Republican] vote in the Senate,” and as discussed before, promise != ability.

> We need to change the way doctors are compensated so that we can attract smart people and also compensate them in a way that promotes best practices.

What we need is a system that can provide decent health care with less use of smart people. There is a finite supply of smart people and the situation is getting worse since India and other countries are starting to catch on and is less inclined to let us strip mine their smart people.

What we need is more systems that allow more diagnosis and treatment to be automated with nurses handing a most of the treatment and less involvement of MDs in the system.

Of course, we could increase the supply of smart people by closing our business and law schools, but I’m sure I would care for letting a high percentage of sociopaths into the medical profession. 😉
