Wow!! I cannot believe there are so many people on here sharing tips and ideas! I am overwhelmed with the support from strangers and I thank each and every one of you! I also cannot believe how bad it is for many of you and don’t understand how you can stand it! Just having heartburn once is enough to make me crazy!! But, I have to report that there has been no nausea, no sour stomach, no sour esophagus and no heartburn for 4 days now. I credit it to yogurt. This may sounds nutty, but after coming off of antibiotics and prednisolone, I think it knocked my digestive system all out of whack. I didn’t eat much for the first 4 days of being sick and when I did, it was nausea all the time, probably from the meds. Now, after keeping a food diary and avoiding trigger foods, I have been completely back to normal, especially after trying yogurt once a day again. I was avoiding all dairy for 4 days and it was tough!! But maybe there’s something to be said (again) for probiotics after all??? Anyone else have this experience? I wonder if it could help someone else, and I’ll let you all know if all the heartburn comes back. And I’ve had my fave cereal with MILK for three mornings now and trying coffee as I write this!!! I hope this is THE END!!! Thanks!!!
Thank you for your input!! I am not a fan of Ginger, but I can certainly become one if I need to!
gosh, I hope none of this nasty stuff happens to you!! good luck and thanks!
Thanks, Mike, and I hope it stays that way!
Oh! That sounds HORRIBLE! How we live and learn…best of luck to you!
woah! How amazing it is that each body is so different! And, I am picturing radioactive scrambled eggs!! (sorry, not funny, I know) but I haven’t had any problems in my whole life with GERD or hearburn and it just seems soooo coincidental that I be on three meds and all this happen. Also, get this, in researching Bystolic (blood pressure med, beta blocker) online, I found a study they actually did testing hearburn relief with Bystolic vs. prilosec or another can’t remember which one. Isn’t that crazy??? Thank goodness all my symptoms are gone for the last 3 days so let’s hope it stays that way!! I am thinking I will be able to stop the bystolic soon, because doc thinks the virus was causing the high bp. It would be great!! Thanks! and good luck to you!
Thanks for your concern, I noticed that on the Doxycyclone ( sp?) didn’t list heartburn as a side effect, but I guess we’re all different! I was planning on seeing my doctor if it didn’t resolve as quick as I thought it should. so far, so good, and hope you stay well, too!
And you are a chef? That must stink if you have to avoid tons of foods!! I love cooking, too, and while I had these symptoms, let me say, the rest of the family suffered, too, because I made such bland food!! hahah!!
Yes, Advil is my pain reliever of choice, but my tummy is so tough, I could take it on an empty stomach and never have any discomfort. And I did take it quite often for headaches and body pain in the beginning so that could have compounded the issue. I hope this is all over now. Thanks for you help and advice!
wow, I wonder if you have a wheat allergy, or gluten issue? Ever had that checked out? Sounds like a great diet tool, though! Thanks!!
Just a suggestion countrygirl34, if you’re responding to a particular poster it helps to either use their screen name or the quote button. It’s kind of hard to figure out who you’re addressing in your last set of posts.
Unfortunately, it sounds to me like you may be experiencing the beginning stages of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). If so, you will have it for the rest of your life. There is no cure.
If so, it’s really important that you treat that by taking a strong antacid like Prilosec (OTC) as needed. You’ll know how much to take (20 mg to 40 mg/day) when your symptoms go away.
There are worse maladies and the medications are very safe so it’s not the end of the world. But left untreated, the stomach acid can produce damage to the esophagus and can even in some cases lead eventually to deadly esophageal cancer, one of the worst types of cancer. You need to treat it.
I’ve been taking Prilosec for many years with no side effects.
I would recommend seeing a doctor to make sure you stay on top of things.
I have tried prilosec, and other prescription and OTC remedies. They all worked just fine, IF I knew I was going to get heart burn, or IF I wanted to wait 45 minutes or so for them to take effect.
Then an old nieghbour lady told me what she used, and I switched. Its cheaper, works in seconds, and pretty much with out side effects.
Baking Soda, about a 1/2 teaspoon (yes, dry) on the tongue, and drunk down with cold water.
I talked to my Doctor about it and he said it was a fine BUT - do not use if you are on a sodium restricted diet, and be carefull not to inhale the dry powder on your tongue before you drink the water. He said it was a traditional remedy going back to the 1850’s.
obviously, I am NOT a Dr, and you should check with your’s if you are considering this, but it worked great for me
I think that you should not have any kind of the tough problem and if you feel that there is any kind of the major or difficulty than goto a doctor and have a complete medical check up… The physician can give you the better one advice…
Agree on all counts but I did want to comment on the Prilosec (and other proton pump inhibitors): while the meds themselves don’t have side effects for most people, there is some concern that they can lead to issues with absorbing minerals, because the thinking is that the acid in the stomach helps with absorption.
If you need them long-term, do discuss with the doctor (which it sounds like you, RockyMountainGuy, have done) because of the nutritional issues AND because of the concerns that even with the antacids, the damage may be happening. As I understand it, the PPIs such as prilosec reduce the acid and stop the pain, but they may not stop the reflux-induced damage.
Anyway - my gastro is happy for me to stay on it long-term but recommends that I take a calcium supplement or otherwise make sure I get a calcium-rich diet.
Gingerforce gel caps. Full fat yogurt (but cut out fatty meat and fried food). Less caffeine. No tomato products, even ketchup. Strangely, bread will set me off, but pasta does not. I tolerate butterfat, but not most oils, except for olive oil.
I feel for you–I’ve been going through the GI betrayal lately. I’m also blaming antibiotics.
