Now that I have Napster, I’m going to try to re-live my high school days and get back into 80’s Heavy Metal (as we speak, I’m listening to a downloaded copy of Megadeth’s _Peace Sells, But Who’s Buying?_). Ahh, 80’s Heavy Metal… the hair… the leather pants… the ripping guitar solos… and then Kurt Cobain had to come along and ruin it all! j/k Can anyone provide some reccomendations? I’m looking for straightforward stuff like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Dokken, etc. I’m not into the extremely heavy stuff like Slayer; likewise, I could do without the lighter stuff like Poison or Slaughter. Thanks. ---

If you’re into some new stuff, I hear the new Pantera album is good. There’s a lot of controversy over it, cuz apparently some teenagers took the murderous and necrophilic lyrics seriously and killed some ten-year-old as a part of a Satanic cult. You’ve gotta love morons like that, keep the genre out of the mainstream. ---

Well, my favorite metal albums are (in no special order): 1. AC/DC: Back in Black; Highway to Hell 2. Aerosmith: Rocks 3. Jeff Beck: “Truth”; “Beck-Ola” 4. Black Sabbath: “Paranoid”; “Master of Reality”; “Volume 4”; “Mob Rules” 5. Blue Oyster Cult: “Blue Oyster Cult” 6. Cinderella: “Long Cold Winter” 7. Cream: “Disraeli Gears” 8. Deep Purple: “Deep Purple In Rock” 9. Foghat: “Foghat Live” 10. Jimi Hendrix Experience: “Are You Experienced?” 11. Judas Priest: “Screaming for Vengeance” 12. Led Zeppelin: I, II, III, IV, and (especially) Physical Grafitti 13. Rainbow: “Long Live Rock and Roll” 14. Rush: “Hemispheres” 15. Van Halen: “Van Halen II” Now, we could argue for ages as to what constitutes heavy metal. Some younger folks would insist that Beck and Cream don’t qualify. Some folks would ask “why not the Who?” For that matter, didn’t King Crimson and Neil Young have lots of songs that bordered on heavy metal (though nobody would classify either act as heavy metal)? Never mind. Those are the best metal albums by MY arbitrary standards (though I’ll undoubtedly think of a dozen more classics as soon as I post this). ---

**Astorian** , most of those bands are good **because they’re aren’t heavy metal**. They’re ROCK. How can you compare Jimi Hendrix with shit like Slayer? Heavy metal, _per se_, sucks volumes. I stopped liking it since I lost my virginity and my last pimple went away. ---

For a fairly straight laced Christian boy, I have a pretty good knowledge of metal from my HS days. Drove my friends from Sunday school insane. 1. Any Metallica from “And Justice for All” back is GREAT. After that album, they got soft. Sure, they sell more albums now, but is acceptance by the mainstream really a goal of true metal? 2. Pantera’s “Vulgar Display of Power” is a classic. “Walk” and “F\*\*king Hostile” are true anthems of agression. This may be construed as “extremely heavy,” but you should give it a shot. 3. Hi Opal. 4. Motley Crue’s “Shout at the Devil” gives you a true glimpse of the power of the band before they went downhill (in my opinion). 5. On the lighter side, I just about wore out my tape of Dokken’s “Tooth and Nail” when I was a Freshman in HS. 6. You can’t go wrong with Ratt. 7. Anthrax through “The Persistance of Time” (which contains a different sort of cover of Joe Jackson’s “Got the Time”) is worth a listen. Also, look for their collaboration with Public Enemy from “Attack of the Killer B’s.” “Bring the Noise” is a classic example of the earliest mixing of rap and metal. Well, these ought to keep you interested for a while. Hope this helps. ---

You want your Heavy Metal, I’ve got your Heavy Metal RIGHT HERE! Motorhead, just about anything really, but I like Overkill and Overnight sensation Iron Maiden, just about anything again but Number of the Beast, Poweslave, Piece of Mind, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son are considered the best. DOn’t forget to look up Bruce Dickinson as well for some of his solo albums. Gamma Ray/Helloween, two German power metal bands that have had some of the same members, namely Kai Hanson. The earlier Helloween, Keeper of the Seven Keys I & II are most favored, though I also like some of the newer stuff like Keeper of the Rings, I think that’s what it’s called. Gamma Ray has a lot of good albums as well though I can’t remember them off the top of my head right now. Virgin Steele, I’ve just gotten into these guys this year, I’ve only got two albums so far, but I like them both. The new one, House of Atrius part 1 is basically the Greek tragity of Agammemon. Armored Saint/John Bush, I’ve just gotten into these guys as well with my Favorites being Symbol of Salvation and Revelations. John Bush left Saint and played with Anthrax for awhile. Anthrax’s Sound of White noise is very good. Judas Priest, most of their stuff is pretty good, though I like Painkiller. You probably already know Black Sabbath and Ozzy. I’ve also heard stuff about Iced Earth, I don’t really like them but I’ll included them here since so many people rave about them. I also hear a lot about Blind Guardian. Try looking around [http://www.hardradio.com](http://www.hardradio.com) for music as well, they have some MP3s and streaming radio with lots of different bands playing. That’s how I found Armored Saint and Virgin Steele. ---

Okay albums titles are in " " sone titles are in() I liked Motley Crue’s “Dr. Feelgood”, Ozzy (of course), Alice Cooper “Hey Stoopid” (big fan of Poison (HA-HA) and Love’s A Loaded Gun), Ministry (Stigmata), Great White (Once Bitten), NIN “Pretty Hate Machine”, Aerosmith “Pump”, Skid Row (their first one, can’t remember the title), Guns N Roses “Appetite for Destruction”…That’s all I can think of right now. ---

Let’s see…Almost everything has been covered, but I don’t think anybody mentioned Triumph or Saxon. Yeah, it’s not as heavy as the rest, but they definitely built the foundations for everybody else. I also highly recommend Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I. (they’ve always been more metal than punk), and the Misfits. ---

Also consider new “progressive metal” – maybe get your feet wet with Dream Theater, the most popular (and least “metallic”) of the genre. ---
