Heavy Metal Reccomendations

I’ll just add that the beautiful epitome of metal is a little band called GWAR! OK, so they aren’t a fantastic band, but metal as you guys seem to mean it isn’t fantastic either. The correct term for most of the bands referred to here is “hair metal.” It’s pop music that grew out of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin in the same way that today’s crappy alternative rock grew out of Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins.

And how about Tool? They aren’t metal by the 80s definition, but they’re more metal than metal and better all-round. I find them to be the modern Pink Floyd (except for their unfortunate verbal profanity). Pink Floyd wasn’t really rock & roll after all.

To hell with it! Let’s go listen to They Might Be Giants. :stuck_out_tongue:

Interesting that you call them the modern Pink Floyd. What do you think of the following albums:

Tiamat:“Wildhoney”
Tiamat:“A Deeper Kind Of Slumber”
Anathema:“Judgement”
Anathema:“Alternative 4”
In The Woods:“Strange In Stereo”
In The Woods:“Three Times Seven On A Pilgrimage”

These, in my mind, are much better choices to carry Floyd’s torch. I think Tool is ok but they’re way overrated.

Well, not that it will make you feel better or anything, but I was perfectly willing to believe you were just a jerk.

You guys want to talk borderline cases that still rock, how about MC5? “Kick Out the Jams” has a suspiciously metallic sound to it, and they were late 60s. Sure, this is getting waaaayyyy off the topic, but no more than discussions of Neil Young and King Crimson, n’est pas?

All these are pretty good selections, some others that I listened to include Wrathchild America, Sacred Reich, Scatterbrain, and Dangerous Toys. There are tons, I’ll have to go into my tape collection to find the ones I know I forgot. I saw Pantera mentioned a few times, has anyone ever heard their 1st album? No, not Cowboys From Hell, but the 80’s glam album they came out with. You just haven’t live until you’ve seen Vinnie Paul in spandex & make up. I know I’ll think of more bands during the night, so I’ll let you know.
