Our town grocery has been out of Hebrew National for about a month. I drove 100 miles to get some this weekend. It was worth it.

I have eaten every type of “frank” since our local grocery quit carrying Hebrew National. There is no comparison. If you have yet to try them - you don’t know what you are missing. It’s like comparing round steak to Filet Mignon.

Sorry - just had a couple and had to share.

I had some last night, and I must wholeheartedly agree. I’m about to have the rest in a few.

Though, Nathan’s are a close second…😉

Hebrew National are the best – no argument. They even have the best slogan (“We answer to a higher authority.”)

Nathan’s are quite close, though, with Sabrett’s a solid third.

Hebrew Nationals are definitely the best hot dogs available at supermarkets. But whenever I’m back in New York, I have to get a Sabrett hot dog at an umbrella stand, with EVERYTHING!

Hewbrew National are good, I’ll grant you that, but for grilling outdoors, I prefer the Bests Kosher or the homemade ones from the local Rumanian Kosher Deli. They seem to take the char a bit better.

I was always partial to the \*\* Zion \*\* brand in supermarkets myself, but could make do with a \*\* Hebrew National \*\*

Beware tho, these are meant for grilling.Have to admit the \*\* Sabrett’s \*\* dirty dogs are great boiled with the red onions. These franks seem to have a “looser” composition than the grilling kind and the water seems to flow thru them rather than blow them up.Could be my imagination.

I have never understood the appeal of \*\* Nathan’s \*\* too salty.Only ate them when it was the only one available whenever I went to Coney island.

But who are these people wo are addicted to \*\* Oscar Mayer \*\* meat franks or other like abominations.I read one of those labels and they actually put chicken parts in them.

Casper’s pretty much beats the band. Great snap and a good length too. Second only to custom made franks like Top Dog , Dittmer’s or that penultimate of wieners, those little red Danish hot dogs that none of you probably know about. Don’t worry, it’s a Scandihoovian thing.

**Hebrew National** are the second best frank out there. **Kowalski** natural-casing franks, grilled outside, reign supreme.

Alas, only us Michiganders can get Kowalski franks, I believe. And only us Michiganders can run down to Hamtramck, to eat at the Kowalski Cafe. It simply does not get fresher then that; Eating across the street from the processing plant!

You say that like it’s a good thing …

People who like sausages or law-making should avoid witnessing either.

You’ve never had the pleasure of making your own sausage? And holy crap that sounds bad, I know. And Hamtramck, which is a mini-city within Detroit, doesn’t exactly have the delicate odor of roses wafting through it anyways…

But there was this one time, when I was walking around Detroit after classes at WSU, that I saw a pig go haul-assing across the I-75 overpass. Escapee from a nearby slaughter-house.

That exhausts my supply of cute and harmless Detroit stories.

I think there should be two categories for ‘best hot dog’: **cased** and **uncased**.

Uncased would again be reigned by Hebrew National, and cased would have Boar’s Head Brand in the lead, IM(not-so-H)O.

No, scratch that; cased would have Katz’s and Heid’s (of Liverpool, NY) in the lead.

If these hot dogs are kosher, are they made of beef?

Was the traditional frankfurter pork?

Yes, kosher hot dogs are made from kosher beef. At lease, the 100% beef ones are. Kosher chicken dogs are made from kosher chicken. Kosher veal sausage is made from kosher veal.

We have Phillies Phranks in our area. They’re so damn expensive! It’s cheaper to go to the Vet and buy one there. At least you’ll get a ball game to watch…

I tried to keep my son from eating hot dogs, but at 15 months we were at a picnic and his older cousin was having one. He popped a piece and it was all over. This was at a time when we were challenged trying to get him to eat and put on weight, so they became a part of his regular menu.

I was lamenting how awful they might be for him, and a friend mentioned Hebrew national. So I got some. My son turned up his nose. Obviously they had too much quality and too few nitrates. Sigh.
