Why does the pinnacle of television programs, Family Guy, occasionally pick on [Conway Twitty](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Og1QRtcWdEY), world’s best singer? Hmmm? Goodnight Darling. Peace, mangeorge ---

I heard an interview with Seth McFarlane talking about it. I think it was on Kevin Pollack’s internet show. If I remember right, McFarlane said it was kind of a joke they were playing on Fox, that they were taking this very expensive prime time air, and wasting it on someone with bad hair, and no charisma (for TV anyway). I haven’t been able to find the actual video of the one used. Though I’m pretty sure there have been two separate cutaways. I also thought I remembered McFarlane saying he likes Conway Twitty, but I can’t remember where I read it. ---

When he was popular, the girls would snuggle up real close and cozy when dancing to his music in the country bars in Bakersfield. This was the post-pill era. Fun for all. One day when I was eating lunch on campus, I overheard a dude at the next table complaining about it. “Why’d they have to waste two and a half minutes on Conway Twitty? That’s cutting into my Family Guy time!” Which is exactly what I think they were going for. When you realize that the show is actively trolling its audience, it’s kinda funny when you overhear people complaining about it. ---

I think it’s funny. A totally whacked out family interrupted by a totally _not_ whacked out Conway Twitty. That _hair_! Anyone remember Glen Campbell? ---

The Twitty clips feature some pretty wild outfits, too, as I recall. Plus, “Conway Twitty” is just fun to say. ---

I don’t know if Conway’s Graceland-style compound, “Twitty City,” is still open to the public, but that would be a great road trip for the Griffins. ---

I actually found that joke funny. They’d done that same joke earlier, but they only played a few seconds of singing. This time, I assumed they were redoing the same gag. But it kept going, and going, and going. About halfway through, I realized “Holy crap! They’re gonna play the entire song?”. Another more cynical take on it is that Family Guy only typically has enough plot to fill about 5 minutes, and they’ve got to fill out the half hour somehow. ---

They do the fill with those silly flashbacks. I tell myself how stupid and gross the show while I’m laughing my ass off. My christian daughter does the same. It’s funny like the first time you see your kid in her crib playing with her shit. ---

To my recollection, one of the original fillers is the one where Peter bangs his knee and spends several minutes cradling it and moaning. They had Lois do the same (with her breast of course). They later brought in other repetitive filler, like Stewie saying “mommy” in multiple ways, or perhaps the chicken fights. They’re designed to make the audience uncomfortable, and exchange nervous glances with their friends if watching in a group, wondering when it will end. ---
