You just HAD to go and bash my military service. Did I do the same with you? No. When you attacked me, I put up enough information for you to know that I was legit. And then I get accused of playing ‘The Military Card’… Catch 22. A no win situation here. Did I call you names? No. I made the observation that you were snide and sneering… which you are. (I expect the “and I make the observation that you are an asshat” remark. Predictable and feeble. Save yourself the trouble.) I’m not going to call you a Stripe-wearer or “career E6” or anything like that… really. I respect the service you gave to the Republic, and even though I do not know which service you were in, nor what your job was, I am sure that you served honorably. As did I. And I don’t get to pick and choose which Amendments to the Constitution I want to support, protect and defend… You probably can’t understand that someone like me is willing to set aside whatever opinions I have because they are subordinate to service to the Republic. I’ve already stated that I HATED some of the guys in my unit… but did that stop me from doing the job? No. If I had to administer 1st Aid or provide covering fire, then that’s what that meant… I didn’t say “Hey. This guy is a total douche who is a danger to himself and everyone around him… I think I’ll let him get killed”… Just what kind of a soldier and NCO did you think I was? That I was willing to risk life and limb of not only myself, but of soldiers under me, risk failure of the mission just so I could f\*ck over some black guy? Are you nuts? Do you really think I’m that shallow? While it is true that I have a distinct lack of empathy for others (I’ve tried, really, to feel something for others… the machinery just isn’t there), I’m not a Blue Falcon. The 3M’s still matter to me… private feelings be damned. \*\* Now, can we have a decent conversation without you casting aspersions onto me? ---

What I don’t get is this: He doesn’t like that black people play the “race card”. OK, alright. I don’t like when black people are racially hypersensitive either, even if I understand what causes it. (Such as things like random chicken bones hitting you upside the head and happening upon websites like chimpout.) But the OP is playing the race card, is he not? If he isn’t, then what the fuck was his intention behind this thread? It might not be the same kind of card that Johnny Cochran played, but it’s still cut from the same deck. Isn’t the OP doing the very the thing he despises in black people? To the OP, I would recommend lurking for awhile. Believe it or not, this board is teeming with black Dopers. Their posts are virtually indistinguishable from white Dopers (but the picture gallery linked in the MPSIMS forum will tell you who’s who). We are smart, funny, interesting, and respectable people. We come from all over the country, have a variety of different experiences, and you know what? Rarely does one hear a peep from us complaining about racism. We talk about it, yeah, but rarely do we initiate the conversation. Nine times out of ten, when someone around here calls another person “racist”, both individuals are self-identified as white. I’m not welcoming you here because I think the board has already met its quota of bigoted fools. However, we ARE supposed to be fighting ignorance, which means that we accomplish nothing if we don’t open the doors up to the unenlightened every now and then. If you’re set in your ways and don’t want to be dissuaded from your limited worldview, then you’re not going to like it here. But if you’re willing to learn some new things, you might actually change your mind about black people. Or at least stop going around chucking chicken bones out of windows like some kind of animal raised in a barn. Or maybe not. Which would just go to show…as much as you scrub, the trash and its smell just won’t go away. ---

Service to the Republic means more than anything. More than personal bias or personal opinion. I didn’t agree with everyone I encountered in the military, on many different subjects- the military is a microcosm of society in general, and you don’t agree with everyone you meet, do you? In fact, there were even a few fistfights involved. But when push came to shove, and it really mattered, personal opinions were set aside for the greater good. Military people give up many rights when they agree to serve, and I view me having to set aside my personal views for the duration as part and parcel with that. However, I never, EVER beat the crap out of someone in the middle of the night or threw them down a flight of stairs, or prosecuted someone under the UCMJ, or was a Blue Falcon to anyone, because of their OPINION. Perhaps the other services are different, but we had guys with widely ranging opinions about everything… even race. We might not have liked their opinions, might not even liked THEM, but we had a job to do, and things were set aside to complete the mission. We don’t eat our own just because someone thinks differently. I find the concept of physically harming someone because of their opinion, especially in the military, as the defining characteristic of the Blue Falcon. \*\* ---

But if you _must_, don’t make it any light or bright color. It needs, minimally, to ‘pop’ off of the white background. Or better yet, just use quote tags properly.
