Officially the bacon number is through actors working with other actors in film or tv. Gibson’s number is 2 since he never worked with Bacon on a project but worked with someone who did. Us non-celebrities are using it more loosely to include celebrities we met otherwise it would be very difficult to play for most of us.

I just realized I have an actual Bacon Number playing by the real rules (or close to it). Matthew Broderick has a Bacon Number of 1. He was in a movie with Kevin Bacon. A friend of mine is an opera and broadway singer (I won’t mention the name because she has some level of niche fame and I don’t want to give away my location that closely). She worked on the movie The Producers giving her a 2. I worked with her on a couple high school plays giving me a real Bacon number of 3.

Someone who is a friend is one degree… and I used LinkedIn to try to get a 2.

Nuh-uh. Thayt shyte ain’t a-happenin’. Not now, not ever.

Nice guy, agree with his and his wifes politics, would probably have a really fun 20-30 conversations… but no. The man clicked no and who am I to disagree? Gah… maybe I’d just annoy the ever-living shyte out of him (and who needs that?). The die is cast & snake-eyes it is…

* * *

So, I will honestly stop trying to annoy Kevin Bacon and will try to move on to a more contemporary individual who might actually put up with my shennanigans… well at least for a ball game.

_PEOPLE OF THE DOPE: I BESEACH THEE!!!_

To pull this off, I will need the following:

\*Possible overnight accommodations in the Greater Chicago Area
\*Donations of several bottles of fine wine and a keg of the finest beer possible.
\*30+ cooked links of the single finest brats ever stuffed from pig.
\*Fresh bread rolls (for the brats)
\*(10) tickets next to each other at either a Bears or Cubs home game.
Tix must be of a game that is Meaningful and Fun to watch.

What I propose has never been proposed by either sane man nor sober beast (luckily I am neither), but silly though it may be, I shall propose it:

What… if I/we invited the Cusak family (spouses included) out to a ball game? Do you think that if the game was good, if the beer was cold, if the brats were fresh, and we were Quite Humble and didn’t bother them much…

…that we might get our Cusak number down to…

_looks left_

_looks right_

…2?

\*\*\* a retraction and an apology \*\*\*

Have you ever written down an idea or a scenario based on events that you are reading at the time and thought it was pretty funny and cool? One that you laughed at after writing it down for a few minutes because of the sheer left-field of it?
Then, even 10 minutes later, you still think its pretty cool, so you hit that send button?

Then you go to sleep, wake up the next day, re-read what you’ve written and realize that this was an idea so bad, so truly embarrassingly bad, that you never should have hit the send button?
An Idea where your keyboard should have had an F13 button just to jump up, slap you and say, “No! Don’t send this…” ?

I apologize for the hijack.

\*\*\*\* no animals were either harmed or converted to brats in either the typing of my post, in this subsequent apology, or in my misspelling the honorable name of “Cusack” \*\*\*\*

Play ball…!

Just to help the thread. Loved the line thrown at Kevin Bacon in a Few Good Men. You are a lousy softball player.

I was military and that was a low, low shot. Loved it. Somebody was in the military helping with the writing.

Aside from that…Tremors. On my list of films I will watch even if halfway through anytime it comes on.

According to the [Oracle of Bacon](http://oracleofbacon.org/), 2.
Christopher Lee was in _Corpse Bride_ with Helena Bonham Carter.
Carter was in _Novocaine_ with Kevin Bacon/

Also, Christopher Lee was in _Lord of the Rings_ with Brad Dourif.
Dourif was in _Murder in the First_ with Kevin Bacon.

On The Oracle of Bacon, I score a 3.

Any Doper come closer specifically using that engine?

Mel Gibson has a 2. He was in _The Beaver_ with Jon Stewart, and Stewart was in _Skum Rocks_ with Bacon.

I’m still not clear how this works. Since I’ve met Mel Gibson, does that give me a number of 3? Or is this only for actors?

I was thinking, “Gosh, how would I even have a Bacon number?” Then I remembered that stint I did as a stagehand at a local theater. Easiest job I ever had, we’d sit backstage with the actors who were between scenes and then go out when the curtain closed and set up the next set. A couple of the performers I met doing this (Max Showalter and Cheryl Giannini) both have Bacon numbers of two. So that gives me a three.

I have a Bacon number of 4, but I’ll never show up on an automated thing like the Oracle.

I once won a High School contest where one of my short stories was presented as a play. It was a fairly poor story (they _wanted_ to use another story I submitted, but the subject matter was fairly dark, so they compromised and used the other story I submitted), and it was a terrible production.

However, some of the actors had done some high school stuff with John Cusack and/or Jeremy Piven, who each have Bacon scores of 2.

In some derivations of the Bacon number, wherein one has only to have a connection with a person (rather than being in a production with a person), I have a Bacon score of 2.

I’m really not a very “star” oriented person, but it really tickles me that, despite my very mundane and unsuccessful life, I’ve managed to score pretty darn well (for a little person) in a delightful popular obsession.
