Help a gin noob

From The Right Nation: Conservative Power in America, by Adrian Wooldridge and John Micklethwait (Penguin Press, 2004), discussing Barry Goldwater’s run for president in 1964:

Never tasted this “Gold Water” beverage, but, IMO, Goldwater had the right assessment of gin.

**Pookah[/: I don’t drink gin in bars here. Like you say, I like to pay rent and eat food.

However we stocked up on alcohol while in the North (loads cheaper) for xmas, so gin and rum drinking at home is not a problem!

Just a quick bump: I did part of my Great Gin Experiment tonight. I was invited to a dinner party (clear drinks ONLY!, as the host had white carpet) and decided it would be a good time to try the old G and T. I ended up going with the Hendrick’s, which turned out to be a huge hit at the party. Prodigious amounts of Seagram’s was brought by others, but the Hendrick’s was gone in a heartbeat. I think I’ve found my new favorite drink, and even managed to turn The Highwayman onto gin :D. Thanks Dopers, you’re the bestest.
