I don’t know the cartoonist, but found it in a daily paper. I think he’s a well known cartoonist. Or was about 20 years ago… I can’t even throw a name out there though. I think it’s a two panel cartoon. Two guys sitting at a bar. Panel one - Guy one : lamenting “My Wife left me, I lost my job, my dog died, and all anyone cares about is my hat!” Panel two - Guy two : curious “What’s the matter with your hat?” Any ideas? I’d love to find it again. Google foo is failing me. ---

I’m sure there’s a name for this kind of joke, where a list of bad things ends with some unusual incongruous detail that grabs the attention, i.e. : A: Did you hear about the war criminal who murdered 500 [members of particular ethnic group] and two kangaroos? B: What? Why two kangaroos? A: Heh, I know nobody cared about [members of particular ethnic group]. I’ve seen and heard multiple variations, so good luck narrowing it down to a particular cartoonist. ---

I have no idea if this particular gag is one of his or not, but I immediately thought of [Joe Martin](http://www.mrboffo.com/index.html), creator of Mister Boffo and Willy & Ethel. ---

^ First thing that popped into my head; that’s his style, all over. Willy: I’m too tired to go to work today. I’m too tired to even come up with an excuse. Ethel: What if your doctor was too tired to come to his office to see you? Will: You wouldn’t happen to know what his excuse was, would you? He also writes _Porterfield_ and _Cats With Hands_. ---
