Quasi, I’m a veteran and have used the VA system for years. They take GOOD care of me. Free meds, free care, good doctors! I live close to Durham NC where the VA has a large hospital, right across the street from the Duke Medical Center. Please let me know what “hoops” you’re jumping through. Maybe I can guide you through some. In any event email me if you need support from an old fool. (70 yrs old fool). I’m on Social Security fixed income but I’ll try to send you a few bucks anyway. Quasimodem, I can’t help directly but if you know anyone that is looking to go back to school, I can help out a lot with financial aid. I am an administrator at a public college and know and run the financial aid process. Things will turn around, I have a really good feeling about it. When stuff gets tough, I always remind myself that if I can go through it, I can come out on the other side. Nothing is a brick wall, I promise. Best wishes. ---

… if y’all don’t mind? **Jake** : Thank you, sir, for your service! It’s always good to meet a fellow vet. Viet Nam era here, and I’m a “zoomie”. **Jake** , in March when things first started going south for us, the VA was one of the first organizations I checked with due to the fact that I only have COBRA till November. (THAT costs me $139.00 a month, which _could_ have been a lot more (over $300.00) had it not been reduced 60%. Well, same story as the food stamps: I had made too much money, but was invited to re-apply. Re: Food stamps: We set up a new appoinment today for later this week, but I remember now when we applied online, we had to add my sister-in-law (whom we live with) in on the income requirement, and that (in addition to my pay) _may_ have been what caused the denial. (I say “may” because you wouldn’t _believe_ what a flurry of paperwork we’ve already amassed, and, of course my memory sucks. We’re digging through everything now (w-2’s, DD214, etc, etc.) to get stuff together in case we’re asked for it. Unfortunately, before D and I re-married in May, and I was still living by myself, I didn’t always save what I should have, due to my forgetfulness. **Jake** , if you’re getting good care from the VA medics, I think you’re one of the lucky ones, and I just hope things get better for us vets all over the US, because we _deserve_ better. Just as those of us who apply for SSDI, do. We paid that money in all our working lives, and now we have to beg for it? I don’t THINK so! I just feel bad for our kids in Iraq/Afghanistan now, because if we Viet Nam/Korea/WWII vets aren’t getting decent care, what do THEY have to look forward to???:mad: Okay off the soapbox. I wrote my counsellor Suzette (of the Alzheimer’s Dementia organization) today, and told her about this, and she wrote back that all those years I spent taking care of sick folks are being rewarded by what y’all are doing for me, and that caused one of my “emotional episodes”. Not because of sadness or depression, but because for the first time since March, my shoulders don’t feel so heavy and my heart is lighter because of what y’all are doing. I wish that in my earlier Dope life I had not been so harsh, though. It makes me wonder, as some of my friends have remarked, if this thing with me didn’t start a whole lot sooner than I thought, and that I’ve just been in denial for all of those years. A disease for which there is, as yet, no cure, has a way of humbling a person, and I have to tell you, the Quasi that joined the Dope in December of 2000, _needed_ a _lot_ of humility.
