Help gun nuts describe their views

Yeah, when you lead with “gun nuts” you’ve pretty much announced you’re not that interested in their actual views.

Fix the spoons first…deaths from obesity is still a greater problem, that’s not even counting the astronomical impact on our health care system, costs, etc. that the non-death impacts of obesity are having.

I don’t think that’s even relevant. I have a fundamental problem with my rights being legislated away because of the actions of the troubled, depressed or mentally ill. Make legislation to get those people the help they need and leave my rights out of it.

And that’s fine. It just means we should debate that particular opinion and not the apparently false claim that gun laws cannot reduce suicides.

Incidentally, this is the same sort of argument we get when trying to tackle obesity. “Why should the government tell me what I should or shouldn’t eat? Trying to stop me from eating what I want no matter how terrible is oppressing my freedom!”

Or at least that’s the argument my TP relations give me; it may just be because it’s Michelle Obama telling them to eat healthy that chaps their hides.

Great non-response - pretty much exactly what I would expect.

But to your “point”, forget the spoons. Before we can adress obesity via spoons, we have to solve world peace. We can only address one concern at a time, and we can’t do anything about one until we’ve fixed the last. Good thinkin.

Before we get to tackling world peace, I demand something be done about parking in this neighborhood. It is awful.

I’d like to see something being done about the Tibet situation, the plight of the Falan Gong folks, Global Warming and the US healthcare situation. Oh…plus, when am I going to be able to start getting those Cuban cigars??? We need some priorities here…

I think the typical gun fetishist entertains pathetic fantasies that some day they’re going to use their gun and be a hero. The fact that this almost never happens and no other industrialized nation on earth faces the problems we do with regards to gun violence doesn’t penetrate their fantasy world.

It’s pathetic, but also infuriating because we are allowing the insecurities of aging white males determine our social policy.

Basically, Americans are always waiting for the next mass shooting then when it happens, the gun fetishists tell us this isn’t the time to politicize a tragedy. When one of the kids of a gun fetishist blow’s his head off, nows not the time either. So we just wait for the next batch of dead people and listen to the gun fetishists spout their sad delusions and do nothing.

So now we have the rationalist side of the issue laid out. Any gun nuts want to rebut?

I don’t really get the rationale of the people that want to get rid of guns in this country doing it in part to reduce the number of suicides. Sounds like they’re pretending to care about an issue they don’t really care about cause they really just want to get rid of the evil guns. I thought those on the Liberal side of the political spectrum generally support the “right to die” philosophy? They also usually support assisted suicide so would you rather someone stick a needle in their arm than the same person stick a gun in their mouth?

For the record I’m pro second amendment but I also believe that as long as you are a legal adult you own your self and have a right to self-determination and yes ultimately a right to die. Seems a little disingenuous to say you want to get rid of guns to stop suicide when I thought most liberals support a right to die.

Those were outstandingly worded poll questions, septimus. They really get at the distinctions between gun nuts and normal people. Let me see if I can add to it:

Question 7 or something,

Joe is an alcoholic crack addict and compulsive arsonist. He is currently out on bail, attending a gun show near a state border with his fellow criminal miscreants. He likes all drugs really, except for the ones needed to treat his recurrent hallucinations. He wants to buy 3 handguns, 1000 rounds of ammunition, a modified AR-15 and a sound suppressor in case he needs to fire his gun indoors. What is the best policy response?

a) Do not close the gun show loophole. Do not require background checks for private gun sales; do not require private sellers to record the sale or ask for identification.
b) Ditto, except note that federal law prohibits private individuals from selling to residents from another state or to someone they know or have reason to believe is prohibited from owning a firearm. Stay oblivious to the lack of requirements for identification.
c) Close the gun show loophole, but continue to support lobbying organizations such as the NRA that push for the opposite policy.
d) Opt for the neuro-typical choice and recognize that not all folks should be handling sharp pencils, never mind packing their pockets with pistols.

Tackle the spoon issue first. Why, only last week some maladjusted loser with too much access to cheap spoons, weekly subscriptions to seventeen different spoon magazines, an entire wall of his bedroom papered with photos of himself posing with spoons and a poorly-spelled blog chronicling his spoon fetish along with his self-pitying grudge against a world that despised him… only last week he broke into the local high school and force-fed twenty-three students and five teachers to death before turning his spoon on himself.

If some fatty is determined to feed himself to death, a spoon is a marginally effective force multiplier compared to eating with his bare hands. If some psychopath is bent upon mass murder, a gun is a hideously effective force multiplier. That’s what guns are for and have been for ever since black powder was first pushed into a tube, that’s what the manufacturers have been intending to make them better at in every generation. Enough of this “spoon” drivel, please. A gun may not make you more inclined to harm your fellow man but, no duh, it makes you orders of magnitude better at putting your inclinations into practice.

If you think its only white or a majority of white folk who own guns u have never lived in a plave like Los Angeles.

Excellent fact-based assessment madmonk28.

Pew: Blacks are only half as likely to own guns as whites. Cite: The demographics and politics of gun-owning households | Pew Research Center

Gallup: “Non-Hispanic whites (33%) are significantly more likely than nonwhites (22%) to own guns. Hispanics (18%) in particular show below-average gun ownership. Twenty-one percent of blacks own a gun.” Men, Married, Southerners Most Likely to Be Gun Owners

Overall: “Men, Married, Southerners Most Likely to Be Gun Owners --Nearly two-thirds of Southern married men own guns”

Touché, I guess? I have never lived in a “plave” like Los Angeles, I live in Washington DC maybe "u"ve heard of it? It is another plave with a crime problem because do vunts who block gun control.

It’s also interesting to delve into the crosstabs a little… You see the doughy vs. physically fit breakdown among gun fucks is 87/13.

If you’re done acting like you’re a 12 year old who overestimates his own intelligence, you could address his point. It is a fact that whites are not the only gun owners. On the other hand, maybe what you are saying is that brown people having guns is a “crime problem.” I used to live in the DC area and there were lots of guns and brown people both.

Pew also shows Republicans as more than twice as likely (49-22) to own guns as Democrats.

Why are blacks much less likely than whites to own guns? Cultural factors like party affiliation may be part, and also the fact (from Gallup) that households with less than $30,000 income are less likely (22-33) to own guns as households above $30,000. But I wonder if police and public reactions also play a role. Any Dopers think that blacks would be risk-free if they paraded their gun-love in restaurants as some white Southerners did?

Again my complaint is not with responsible hunters, hobbyists, or self-defenders. It’s with the unintelligent brouhaha and fetishist faith that gun rights are some special American value. (And who was the Republiotard who called gun owning a God-given worldwide right?) Or anyone so obsessed or perverted that their stance on guns affects their votes for national office.

I’m still curious how gun lovers answer some of the questions I’ve raised. Start with the off-duty cop who shot his daughter in their dark garage. Heroic home defender who got unlucky? Or moronic coward who shouldn’t be a cop?

I have no idea what his point is, his post was asinine. My point is that white fear drives ou gun culture; specifically, irrational fear of savage blacks. This fear has prevented us from having reasonable gun laws, allowing gun violence to run rampant in the U.S.
