My man and I are putting on the second annual Halloween Movie Extravaganza at the end of the month. You’re all invited. The idea is that we have 5-6 scary Halloween moveis going on from noon to midnight and invite all our friends over to have drinks, foodies, and watch movies with us. So what’s everyone’s favorite movies? We showed OUR favorite movies last year. I’m in the market for sick and twisted, campy, really scary, whatever. What we don’t want is to show all your basic “Halloween” and “Chucky” movies that everyone’s seen already. One or two of those are OK, but we’d rather have stuff that is either considered classic, or is something that most people may not have seen. ---

I vote for Strangeland. Very very very good. At least, if you find piercings, tatoos and body mutilation interesting. Dee Snyder is in it and did a good job at scaring the heck out of me. Oh yeah, there’s also 3 music videos at the end of it, Coal Chamber, Kid Rock’s and a Sevendust video. Super kick ass. Cow God * * * “I’m not dumb. The original Halloween, Elm St, and Friday the 13th, are really good… The Amityville Horror is good too, The Car, When A Stranger Calls, The Shining, or Salems Lot…yeah, SALEMS LOT!! ---

What about the b&w classics? Dracula, Frankenstein, ect. For some really good atmospheric classics, you might want to check out some of the movies produced by Val Lewton in the 40’s, like Cat People, Curse of the Cat People (though that’s really more of a fantasy than horror), I Walked With a Zombie, and The Body Snatcher, to name a few. Freaks is definitely an offbeat classic, too. ---

Oh! I forgot to mention Dead of Night, too, another classic from the 40’s, probably one of my favorites. That ventriloquist movie with Anthony Hopkins, Magic, ripped this one off, and badly, too. Also, The Kingdom is a good horror/black comedy. It’s 4+ hours, though (it actually comes from a TV series in Denmark). ---

Yeah, the fine old howlers by Hammer. Great stuff. Of course a lot may depend on how wrecked everyone is… For high camp, you can’t beat “Theater of Blood”; Vincent Price, Diana Rigg and good character actors chewing the scenery and having a ball w/ it. For classy, ice-down-the-neck fear, try “The Haunting”, the REAL one w/ Claire Bloom. The terror is subtle, and just deadly. (The recent remake was dreadful; an overblown, gaudy mess and Liam Neesom being a hunk doesn’t redeem it.) Two more: “Nosferatu”, the original German version of Dracula. Max Schreck (sp?) was great; he was _undead_ and unnatural and scarier than shit. And “Plan 9 From Outer Space”; yes, the classic groaner that is just SOOOO bad it has to be seen to be believed. It has grave robbing, aliens, the worst production effects ever and the acting is worse. (Watch for Bela Lugosi; he died during filming and they substituted another actor who didn’t even _remotely_ look like him…) Sorry. Got carried away–again. Veb ---

Dear Athena: TVeblen is right; show “The Haunting” – the 1963 B&W version – is one of the scariest movies ever made. “Psycho” by Alfred Hitchcock is another chiller. I recommend “The Wicker Man,” a British film made by Red Lion Studios, I think. For humor, try the musical version of “Little Shop of Horrors.” Feed me, Seymour! This will piss some people off, but I think “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” is very appropriate for Halloween. Thanks for the invite, but I am going to the Indiana-Michigan game that weekend. ---

The first Hellraiser movie is definately the best horror movie ever made. Also, the original silent Nosferatu. 1922, and it REALLY will freak you out ! ## Otherwise, more recently I liked Fallen starring Denzel Washington. Urban Legend might be an idea too.
