In Bruce Sterling’s SF near-future SF novel _Islands in the Net,_ there was a large movement of people who had taken the next step beyond vegetarianism and would eat nothing but “scop” – single-cell organic protein, grown in vats. Their reasoning was, how can plants be good for you? Plants are full of natural pesticides!
