> I didn’t stay in any Tokyo hostels either, but I have stayed in hostels in other places and never had a bad experience. You can expect to pay somewhere around US $30-50 per night in a hostel. The trade-off in a hostel is between price and privacy – the cheaper the room, the more people you’ll be sharing it with. Hostels do tend to fill up in the summer, so you may have to move around a bit rather than staying in one hostel for your whole trip. You can check availability and book online at [four different Tokyo hostels](http://www.hihostels.com/dba/Hostels-Tokyo-list.php?lang=E&city=JP%7C0070) through the [Hosteling International](http://www.hihostels.com/web/index.en.htm) website. There are also plenty of independent hostels, you can search for them online or consult a guidebook for recommendations.

I can recommend a great hostel in the Asakusa area, right behind Sensoji Temple (where Lamia also recommended the Chisun Inn): the [Sakura Hostel](http://www.sakura-hostel.co.jp/). I have stayed there on numerous occasions, and can’t recommend it highly enough: the facilities are immaculate, the staff is fantastic (lots of young English-speaking people who will go to great lengths to help you out) and the neighborhood can’t be beat, plus you can book online. It’s a great place to meet people of all ages, also. When I’m in the Tokyo area without my husband, I’ll usually save money by getting a dorm bed there (and they _do_ have female-only dorm rooms). The same company also has similar hotels, etc. around Tokyo (they’re linked from that website).
