I believe it used to me marketed as Lea & Perrins Sweet & Spicy steak sauce before it was discontinued. Then I found a good copy at Trader Joe’s called “Trader Joe’s All Purpose Steak/Chicken Sauce”. Now it seems that Trader Joe’s has discontinued it also! So can anybody recommend a suitable replacement? Here are the list of ingredients (as read from my very last empty bottle):

Tomato Concentrate, Distilled Vinegar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Spices, Onion Powder, Water, Vinegar, Molasses, Corn Sweetener, Anchovies, Natural Flavorings, Onions, Tamarinds, Salt, Garlic, Chilli Peppers, and Shallots.

I love this sauce, and I can’t bear the thought of living without it. Somebody please help me!

You have the basics.
Experiment.

I make a bbq sauce from:
Worchester, ketchup, brown sugar, salsa.

Those four ingredients are about the same as what you are talking about.

Mix in a bowl, sniff, taste and add and subtact. You’ll get it eventually.

I think the ingredients are listed in the order of their predominance in the sauce, if that helps.

Meanwhile, you might try this brand:

I want you to know that I have spent the last twenty minutes looking for either of your sauces on the net. I’m so hungry now that I may drink some barbecue sauce straight from the bottle.

According to the official Lea and Perrins site [here,](http://www.lea-perrins.com/contacts.php#qi) the Sweet and Spicy Steak sauce is still being made, although it may taste slightly different since they changed the recipe.

[This place](http://www.bobsofcanton.com/steak_sauces.htm) is at least one place that carries it.

Kroger used to make a pretty good knock-off of it.

Picapeppa Sauce is pretty much the same thing, but more concentrated, and a bit hotter. A New Orleans yummy; mix it up with cream cheese and use as a cracker spread. Yum-a-bon temps roulez!

I have found the Paul Newman brand of steak sauce to be very good. It doesn’t have the bite of A1 or Heinz that I find ruins the taste of beef.

Thanks for the responses so far, guys – I’ll look into your suggestions. I don’t think I’ve got the time or gumption to try to make the sauce myself – so I’d prefer to find something I can purchase in convenient bottled form.

Okay, for those of you following this thread (and I’m sure there are thousands of you), I’ve found a simple way to make a sauce that tastes remarkably similar to Lea & Perrin’s Sweet & Spicy:

1. Run to your local Safeway and purchase a bottle of “Safeway Select Gourmet Club Steak Sauce” (Original, _not_ bold).

2. Pour out about 1/8th of the sauce down the drain.

3. Pour a small amount of water (about 1 ounce) into a small glass and add 2-3 heaping tablespoons of sugar to it. Mix it until you have a thick, gooey sugar solution.

4. Using a funnel, pour the sugar solution into the bottle of steak sauce.

5. Close the bottle tightly, and shake vigorously until the contents are well-mixed.

Voilá! You now have a sweet and spicy sauce that’s isn’t overpowering or tart – perfect for chicken or steak!
