My friends are getting together to start a bar business but they can’t decide on a name yet. A short description - it’s a three level space in an arty part of town. Clientle will be a mixed bunch - art students, young professionals. The ground floor is where the main bar is. Standing room only with a stage at the back. The basement will be a ‘loungey’ chill-out space. And the top floor’s an open-air space with seats for smokers. Decor will be stone and wood. And I think they’ll be asking some of the students to contribute prints and paintings for the walls. Music will mainly be a mix of alternative rock, blues and jazz. With a little trip-hop and ambient thrown in on some nights. Nothing pop or Top 40. So what do you think they should name it? ---

I always wanted to open a bar and call it _Dante’s_. Three stories to simplify thing: Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell, decorated in appropriate colors and wall murals. ---

There are three levels to the club. Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell. I am fairly certain it is Miami but I could be wrong. Cool idea. How about Wax, or the Den? ---

**Bardacious** : adj. [1920’s] excellent, wonderful, the very best. [var. on bodacious]. When I find this word **Bardacious** , I see the following: **Barse** : [1990’s] the portion of flesh between the underside of the testes and the anus. I never know this until now, which only goes to show that a dictionary is a wonderful book for educational purposes. But, I prefer **Bardacious** for the name of the bar. ---

Dont’ name it everything and just use a symbol (or series of I suppose) describing it. ---

Two ideas that aren’t original with me, but I really wish they were: **1)** When I was in college, a friend told me this story about a shirt he had. A bunch of his mates were sitting around one night wishing there was a cool place for them to go. They came up with a name and actually had some T-shirts printed up with a logo and everything. The name of the place? _Hank’s Opium Farm and Grill._ **2)** I’ve heard that Dick Cavett has always wanted to open a little bistro and call it the _Persona Non Grotto._ I think the latter would be a better name for the place you describe. ---

My friends and I always wanted to get a bar and call it “The Occasional Nipple,” but I don’t suppose that’ll work for your neighbourhood. You can always try picking a name out of your favorite (public domain) piece of literature, though … that’s how I named my cats. 🙂 ---

I once came across a bar in the middle of nowhere in NW Florida with the name of “The I’m Not Here Saloon”. I liked that 😃 There was a bar on US 1 in SoFlo known as the “Last Chance”. I liked that one, too, but not as much as the first one 🙂 ---
