I knew a guy who claimed he’d name his first-born daughter **Chruck** (pron. like truck). Reading this thread I’ve come to the conclusion that people’s tastes in names vary a fair amount. I knew plenty of kids with pretty odd names. I don’t think it’s such a very big deal if it is a good name. (It’s good if they have a good set of friends too). I have a pretty normal name and I like it a lot, so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about. Here’s a couple almost normal names I like: Beatrix (know a cute-as-a-button girl with this name) Linnea I think that it can be good to give your child a name that jibes well with English sound-patterns (if you are living in an English-speaking place). This is not a requirement, but it is nice if people can get it right when they read it most of the time (with a little brains). I know several people with names like this and it helps a lot because although their names raise eyebrows others can get used to it pretty quickly. ---

Thanks to all!! I purposely left this very wide open because I really wanted to see the range of names suggested. So now a few more details. This will be my third and final child. I have a boy and a girl and we have no intentions of playing naming games with them. I have an irish last name, so I was considering an irish or gaelic first name. Perhaps something along the lines if Erin. I was thrilled to see **Irishgirl** ’s response for this very reason. I love the name Sarah, but because of its popularity and other reasons, I’m kind of backing away from it. I couldn’t agree more that I want something common but not too common. I think almost all parents want that, but somehow there are still serious clumps in the naming game. So keep the suggestions coming. We are shying away from any “A” or “M” names, simply because our two other kids’ names begin with those letters. I know names are highly personal, so I don’t really expect there to be any consensus here. But it is still nice to see the suggestions. ---

I’ve always had a fondness for names that end in “N”: \*\*Evelyn Marion Helen Ellen (or Eleanor) Arwen Eowyn Maren (the first syllable rhymes with “car” not “care”) Audrey\*\* I’ve always thought these names were beautiful names for someone who will eventually be an adult female. One couldn’t possibly be a dingbat if their name was Marion, right? You mentioned **Erin**. In Robin McKinley’s wonderful book _The Hero And The Crown_\*, the heroine’s name is **Aerin**. She had beautiful flame-colored hair and a brave heart. ---

My daughters name is **Erin** , and it goes wonderfully with our Irish last name. **Mr.Insomnia** has a Gaelic ring with Erin spelled **Eirinn** and we decided at the last minute not to spell it that way, simply to avoid the troubles we know she’ll have. I second **Grace**. That’s Erin’s middle name. ---
