# Help me name my new puppy!

Mr. Poysyn came home with an early Christmas present, a beautiful black lab puppy.
It is a male, but we can’t agree on a name. Any suggestions?

**Poysyn** I’d suggest getting a shortlist of names and then standing at your back door and yelling them out, ‘trying them on for size’ so to speak.
We are fostering a puppy called Tarquin for the Australian Customs Dept. and I always feel such a git calling out his name.

Aww, is he all round and fat and fluffy and do his widdle ears go forward when he’s happy? Oh yes they do! OH YES THEY DO!
Anyway, Snoopy.
Or go and google what various languages use for the word “black”. Maybe there’s something nice in Swahili or Russian. Or a cool word from one of the Canadian Indian languages, him being a Canuck and all.
A booze word is always nice. Sherry or Brandy or in his case, Guiness.
Eddie. Eddie is a good name for a dog. You can’t go wrong with Eddie.
Congratulations! They’re great dogs and make wonderful loyal goofy friends. And they’re smart–my friend has a black lab guide dog named Willow who can navigate Times Square with her with no problem. OK, so she’s trembling a little at the end of it, but dammit, she does it.

I called the last lab that I owned Dubbs. It was simple, (albeit dopey) and seemed to suit him to a tee. You are correct to wait a while to name your pup. In a few days or weeks his name will come to you.

If he’'s a crazy little thing that chews up everything, call him Mambo.
Those have always been my two favorite dog’'s names. Funny, since I named my dogs Toby and Fugly.

Well I must be crazy. Our first night of kennel training he cried for twenty minutes then settled down. Forty minutes later he worked up again, for an hour.
I took him out and he peed.
He cried for another forty-five muntes, then went to sleep. He lasted until six this morning.
As son as he got outside he peed and pooped.
I was so proud.
And sleep-deprived.
Hopefully he’s better tonight.
