These weren’t road agents. We saw lots of those and we were always just waved on by. This was different and our driver knew it as soon as he saw them and told us to lock the doors and roll up the windows. These were just criminals. It was shortly after leaving Maasai Mara on our way to the Tanzanian border.
Ok I’ve finally gone through some photos on my phone. I still haven’t gone through the ones on my camera so some of these phone ones aren’t all that great quality but still show what the trip was like.
It all looks very familiar. I thought it was amusing how elephants would stand in some brush and act like you couldn’t see them. I have a photo of one that was standing behind a tree with his trunk sticking out and sniffing the air to see what we were. Like we couldn’t see the rest of him sticking out from behind said tree.
Yeah, Mr Hidy originally charged us when we came around a corner and then he ran off to “hide” behind the bush, obviously waiting for us to drive by so he could rush out at us again - which is exactly what he did. Really made me laugh.
The big giraffe was eating leaves off a spiny acacia tree. He’d run his tongue along the huge spikes like he was licking a lolly pop. For some reason it really made me laugh. I accidentally barely brushed by one and ended up with a bleeding hole in my thumb and there he is rubbing his tongue all over it!
The lion cup up to his waist in the buffalo’s butthole was one of the best things I’ve seen in my life. He was so happy in there, covered in poo and blood.
Awesome! What was the monument with the skulls?
How did your water situation work out? Was anything you picked-up in this thread useful?
Well, the lion cub up to his waist in the buffalo’s butthole was one of the best things I’ve seen in my life, too.
Also got a LOL at the restroom sign about the destruction of the baboons. What was the raven doing, performing a routine on the parallel bars?
Incredible photos! how exciting, how brave!
We were alarmed at first by elephant charges, but our guide told us that it’s usually young bulls that are practicing their manliness. Further, if the trunk is up and they’re making a lot of racket, kicking up a lot of dust, etc., it’s a mock charge. Cape buffalo, on the other hand, never mock charge.
That was where Lucy (australopithecus) was found! I was extremely excited to see that.
We used bottled water for everything, every time. Even brushing our teeth. When we went swimming we always made sure to not get any in our mouths. Probably overkill, especially at the nice places we stayed, but neither of us got any diarrhea.
That Raven was trying to steal my binoculars! He was massive and had the weight behind him to pull them off the ledge so I had to really hold on to them. He tugged on the strap like a dog does to a rope toy. He was awesome.
That’s Ngorongoro Crater in the background of that picture. Awesome place where we saw 9 endangered Black Rhinos.
There was a massive male buffalo standing in the middle of the road watching us approach. There was no giggling or edging forward from us. In fact he took one step towards us and our driver started backing up. We just waited till he was way off the road and then quickly went by.
That’s why I slept so soundly when there was one sleeping under my window
