Huh - “century eggs” or thousand-year eggs are delicious. Although, I must say, the ones I have in restaurants are much better than the ones I buy in the Asian grocery store, which are kind of smelly. I’d like to know where to get the non-smelly ones. The one time I had a durian-custard-filled roll, I could still taste it two days later. I kind of liked the flavor at first, but it got old very quickly. ---

Eskimo icecream, which is very popular in the Arctic villages: One can of Crisco, mix in berries of choice. Eat. Also, fermented beaver tail. This is beaver tail that has been buried for an unspecified amount of time until it’s rotted. Then it’s dug up and eaten, and then somebody calls the medevac chopper. Frozen auks. In Greenland, auks are netted from the cliff edges, killed and then allowed to freeze. During winter, they’re dug up and eaten raw and still frozen: just spit out the feathers and bones as you go. ---

[Hakarl](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A1karl) (fermented Greenland shark) is a traditional dish in Iceland that I had the pleasure of trying while traveling there. It’s pretty nasty, although I choked it down without too much trouble. It’s served cut into (thankfully small) cubes and eaten with toothpicks. It has an almost overpowering ammonia flavor/aroma with a rotten-fish undertone. Anthony Bourdain tried some when he went to Iceland with No Reservations, and claimed it was the worst thing he’s ever tasted. Incidentally, none of the Icelanders I talked to enjoyed it, and many (especially those under 30) had never even tried it. They describe it as being the kind of thing you order on a dare and chase down with a bunch of shots. ---
